Tell me about Cabo

Possibly thinking of Cabo for an upcoming vacation in May. I've been to the Riviera Maya area before, but I hear that Cabo has a  more "west coast" feel and the ocean isn't really swimable (which doesn't matter much to us). Is it better to do an all inclusive there or not? How are the restaurants and is it an easy cab ride? Maybe thinking of renting a timeshare from redweek? But I am a bit hesitant because it may be just too quiet for the 2 of us to not be at a "hotel".

Re: Tell me about Cabo

  • We just returned from there yesterday! We loved it!

We aren't really the AI type, so we found a great little family run boutique hotel in San Jose del Cabo. It was right on the beach and so so beautiful! http://hotelcasacostazulcabo.com/

It is only a year old and it feels like the type of place that was someone's dream project.  DH spoke to the owner and I guess they have a 12 year lease on the property and while the first year was rough, they are really hoping to make it a success. I hope they do, because it is just such a special gem of a hotel!  Beautiful touches, safe, personal, thoughtful.  Breakfast every morning was whatever we wanted (whenever we wanted!) - prepared in a little kitchen off the "restaurant". It was just so laid back and wonderful. I really hope to go back there again!

We also rented a car, so that enabled us to explore the area a bit. We drove up to Cerritos - which was an adventure because they are rebuilding the road and a lot of the journey was on very rough dirt roads. It would have been fine in a 4x4, but our compact rental was jolted quite a bit and I was praying that we'd get through it without a flat tire!  But Cerritos was nice - good surf and some whale watching -  and felt very safe.  I wish we could have gone further up to Todos Santos, but I just didn't think our car could handle it.  Hopefully next time!

If you are thinking of going in May, the surf will be firing, so some of the places we were able to swim may not work. But if you do want to get in the water, there are plenty of beaches, especially off the Sea of Cortez, that are really nice.  We enjoyed a few afternoons at Chileno Bay.  It has some decent snorkeling and is a pretty easy beach to just lounge around at.  We also wanted to try Santa Maria, but missed the turn off! Oh well - next time, right?

As for food, Deckman's (http://www.deckmans.com) was right across the road from our hotel and was really tasty. A bit spendy - especially for wine - but the waitstaff was wonderful, the chef was pretty cool, and the music was great!  We also went to Habenero's in town (http://www.habanerosgastrogrill.com) and had a great meal.  From there we went to their partner restaurant, Don Sanchez, and watched an amazing Salsa band from Cuba. It seemed that the tourists left at around 10 and then locals flooded the place - it was pretty fun and very lively!

We spent most of our time in San Jose del Cabo (where our hotel was), and I liked it that way. Several locals warned us about San Lucas - theft, scams, crowds - and while we went there a few times, we really didn't care for the party/tourist vibe. Far too loud.  San Jose was much quieter and seemed more "real" - - although, still a bit touristy.  In San Lucas it felt like everyone was trying to sell you something or get you to sign up for something, but in San Jose, with only one exception, they were just being friendly and helpful and didn't have an agenda.

While we were just looking for a beach getaway and spent most of our time at beaches (swiming, snorkeling, surfing), there seemed to be plenty of other activities. Zip-line tours, whale-watching, horse-back riding, parasailing, etc. I think had we gone for longer (we only went for four days), we would have done some of those things.   Good luck with your planning!
  • I have been twice. I am from Phoenix and Cabo reminds me of home but with an ocean! It's got the desert landscape rather than being lush and the sand is a bit grittier and some beaches are swimable but most are not. the first time I was there we stayed at the Westin. the second time, we stayed at Zoetry Casa del Mar. i LOVED Zoetry. Plus, when you stay there, you have access to Dreams Los Cabos, which is a much larger property with tons of restaurants. They are both AI, so you can essentially try a different restaurant every night and everything is paid for. Zoetry even pays for the cab ride to Dreams, which is all of 5 minutes down the road. I personally do not like to wander too much on shorter vacations, which is what we did each time we went down there (3 nights). So, I don't have much to offer in the way of restaurants or activities. My sole activity was laying by the pool!

  • LOVE Cabo! We have been going there twice a year since 1996- this is the first year that we are going somwhere different for a spring vacation. The ocean is not swimmable, it has a very strong undertow- you can't just walk in from the beach. I never cared about this, as I don't swim in the ocean, we just either lounge at the beach or the pool.

I would see if you can rent a timeshare at a hotel- that way you can have more than just hotel room, but you still have the hotel for entertainment. We own timeshares at the Westin and the new Grand Sol Mar- and both are timeshares that are also part of the hotel- I think it's the best of both worlds. I would also stay closer to town- I love our timeshare at the Westin, but it's a good 30-40 minutes from town by cab. If you think you will want to go out at night I would stay closer to downtown Cabo. This is why we just recently bought at Grand Sol Mar- it's downtown by the marina- much better for nightlife.

You can take a cab anywhere and everywhere in Cabo- I love the restaurants- The Office, Sunset De Mona Lisa, and Hacienda el Coyote are my three favorites.

Our Journey from two to three! 3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt. 12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us, 5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Another Cabo lover here. We had our wedding in Cabo and own a timehsare there as well. Cabo is not the town to go the AI route, there are too many good restaurants to visit and experience. I love my timeshare because it has the "hotel" feel to it and it's close to everything. It's called the Pueblo Bonito Rose and it's located on the only swimmable beach in Cabo, there are a few other resorts on the main beach too which are very nice. I love it because it is close enough to down town that you can walk to bars and restaurants or take a quick cab ride. Plus there are tons of good restaurants and bars right on the beach that you can visit just by walking out of your resort. I would stay someplace on "El Medano" Beach close to downtown.

I would look into these resorts:

    http://www.me-cabo.com/

    http://www.clubcascadasdebaja.com/photogallery.asp

    http://www.casadorada.com/

I've only stayed at the Rose so I can't comment on the other resorts. The chat boards on trip advisor have great info on Cabo and great restauarant reviews. PM me if you want more info. I've been going down to Cabo for gosh, I guess 12 years now!!

  • Thanks for all the great info!
