MFP girls...

how do you figure out your calories for recipes? Do you spend the time to put in all the information? I find that I'll not stick with it if I have to do that.  Or... do you just trust what others have put in and go with it?


Also, how do you know if the fresh veggies on there are accurate?

  • So you can either enter in all of the information from your recipe, or if you got a recipe from online or its something that is pretty common, you can just type in the name of the recipe and choose something that you think is pretty close.  I tend to err on the side of caution if I just choose a recipe off the site, which is what I do 95% of the time. 

    Also, when you search for a recipe or go to enter something into your meal for the day, you type in what you want to search and then click on what you think might be a good estimate of what you ate.  Once you click on the left side (your list of things that came up on the search) you will get more information on the right side of the screen.  Underneath the title of the food you are considering adding there is a section that says "member submitted, XX confirmations".  I figure anything that has a lot of confirmations is probably pretty accurate.

     As for the fruits and veggies.  I have a rough idea of how many calories they would be and for the most part that number is pretty low.  I just sort of estimate things.  Especially with veggies.  Most veggies (aside from corn and a few others) are pretty low in calories, so if you're off by a few calories it's not that big of a deal.

  • I'm not doing MFP (not even sure what that stands for), but based on the context, I thought I'd respond.  :)  Last year when I was trying to lose weight, I used Spark People to count calories.  I was the same as you....if I had to enter every ingredient, it wasn't going to happen.  So I would find something in their list that looked close and just use that.  I wasn't militant about it, I just wanted a good, general tally of calories so that I had an idea of how I was doing each day.  I didn't obsess over 10-20 calories here and there.  HTH!

    This exactly! MFP=my fitness pal.  It is basically the same thing as spark people, although after using both, I definitely like MFP better!

    Yup, bananas are like 90 calories a piece.  I rarely eat bananas. There are a lot of other fruits I can eat that are not as many calories, plus I like crunchy foods.  Bananas are certainly not crunchy...
