*Reinedumonde* and other knitters: need advice
I'm making a ballet sweater for my niece for her birthday. It's a basic kimono/wrap sweater. I don't like the fact that it calls for a long ribbed band you then have to sew around the edge of the sweater, and you're supposed to have long pieces hang over to somehow tie around the kid. Yuck.
Would it be acceptable/look OK if I just picked up and knit around the front and neck, and maybe incorporated a buttonhole to secure it? It just makes more sense to me that way.
It's from a book, but I can try and find a link to the pattern if that will help.

This is the picture from Ravelry:
I'll try and take one from the book today, as well as including some instructions so you see where I'm going with it. See that ribbed part in the front that comes into a V? I'm supposed to knit that as a LONG separate piece, with overhangs. Then I'm supposed to sew it on the front edge of the sweater, leaving an 8" overhang on one side and a 16" overhang on the other, to wrap around the back. Yuck.

I guess it depends on how much you want it to wrap and tie. I don't think you need to knit it as a separate piece--unless you've already knit the rest of the sweater. If you pick up and knit from the edge, the ribs won't go in the right direction. In that case, you're kind of stuck sewing on the edging.
However, if you haven't knit it yet, you can knit those rib stitches as a sort of border, knitting those ~7 stitches in rib and then working the v-neck decreases. It *should* work the same way. Then when you bind off for the front pieces, leave the ribbed border live and knit those stitches until they'll meet in the middle of the back. That way you only have to sew along the back neck.
In both instances, you could easily use a button on the inside and/or the outside to fasten it. A well-places YO in the corners would probably work.
This is a little difficult to describe, but if you want a tie on the outside, you'll need to start one of the ribbed edging pieces early. Knit 6-8" of it separately, then join it to your sweater piece when you start the neckline decreases. Then make one small separate ribbed piece (probably 6-8") and sew that to the outside waist, where you want the bow to be. Does that make sense?

Yeah, sounds like you're stuck sewing on the edging. Sucks.
However, you might still go with the button on the inside, simple tie on the outside idea, rather than wrapping the whole thing around the child. Omit 16" from the suggested edging and sew it on flush one side and with 8" hanging off the other. Then make a smaller tie and attach it to the outside waist. I used this method with this sweater and it was SO much easier than wrapping all the way around.

This is to mimic the look of a wrapped ballet skirt, where you simply wrap the fabric and then tie long ribbons around the waist, no? I think it will be cute when finished, although it sounds strange in concept.
But in general, I am all for altering patterns when they don't match my vision.
Yes. I think the width of the border I'm knitting will be bulky wrapped around a 3yo. I prefer it to look more like a kimono sweater. I'll let you know how it turns out!
