Tell me about Hawaii in March - whale watching, weather, etc.
DH and I are celebrating our 10 year anniversary in 2013. We'd like to go back to Hawaii - we honeymooned in Maui. But, we're thinking about going for whale watching season, maybe sometime in March, and trying a new island... maybe Kauai. How's the weather in March? How is whale watching in Kauai? And any other thoughts? We're considering taking our kids (will be 3.5 and almost 1) and my parents (babysitters, and because they never go anywhere) with us too. Any thoughts on Hawaii with family in tow?

Re: Tell me about Hawaii in March - whale watching, weather, etc.
I live on Oahu and just visited Kauai. We saw whales while we were there! There are plenty of whale tours to do as well on the island--we just saw them from shore. The standard time they say the whales migrate to the Hawaiian islands is from Dec-March. So you may be cutting it close by coming in March, you never really know.
The weather is usually around 75-85 year round, March is on the end of the "rainy season" for Hawaii. So you may have a couple rainy days--but most likely it will just rain once during the day and be gone quickly.
You'll want to rent a car for any island you go to--so that may be one thing to think about with kids in tow and car seats/strollers. I don't have any kids so I can't comment on how it would be to tote all of that for vacationing.
Our first trip to Kauai was in March. We were unlucky and had a storm, so the weather was pretty sucky. It was very windy with big surf everywhere on the island except Poipu. And even without a storm you still have a chance for rough surf and rain on the north shore of the island. The good news is that we could see whales spouting and breaching right from the shore, and we did an abbreviated boat tour (we were supposed to see the Na Pali but it was too rough, so we just hung around the southwest shore) and saw whales from the boat, too.
It's hard to say if Kauai would be good for a family without knowing what your parents are like. If they're relatively active it should be fine, but Kauai can be a bit quiet and most of the fun is outdoorsy stuff. If they're OK with that then I don't see why it would be a problem.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.
