Washington, D.C. questions
My sister moved to D.C. last week, and several of our family are going to visit her in March and again in June or July. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or blog posts that they could tell me about. Anything you could tell me about restaurants, tours, and sites would be great! Thanks for the help!
Re: Washington, D.C. questions
i believe there is a sticky post with lots of ideas on the local DC board. i have some posts with links and photos from some of my favorite DC restaurants in my blog.
things we've done with visitors: old town trolley tours, the national archives, the national gallery of art, the natural history museum, the zoo, the wineries in leesburg, VA (about an hour from downtown).
some of my favorites are zaytinya, oyamel, brasserie beck, tacklebox, dc noodles, cava, and ted's bulletin. on my list to try soon are zola and graffiato.
I agree with PP's recs for Zaytinya and Cava. We also enjoy going to Fado, an Irish pub in Chinatown. They have great pints of Guinness and really good Irish food.
My favorite, favorite museum is the Holocaust Museum. It's a bit somber, but really interesting and moving. The changing of the guards at Arlington is another really moving one.
If it's nice and you feel like walking, you can do the capitol, the white house, the mall and all the monuments in an afternoon on foot.
DC Ducks is run by the same company as Old Town Trolleys and Monuments by Moonlight, and is also a fun tour (particularly in warmer weather, since you're boating on the Potomac). As a PSA for your sister, anyone who lives in the DC area can get their ticket for any of those three tours for free when they are also purchasing a full-price ticket (she'll just need to register online and show her driver's license when you go to the ticket counter): http://www.dcducks.com/dc-deals
If you're feeling adventurous, DC is known for its Ethiopian restaurants. Ben's Chili Bowl is a DC insitution, and worth checking out if you're in the area. Penn Quarter/Chinatown is a great area for restaurants. In addition to those cheeky and others mentioned, we like Proof, Ella's Pizza, Matchbox, Zola, and Central (although that one isn't in Penn Quarter). CoCo Sala is also fun for a girls' night out. If you're beer fans, RFD has a huge beer list. For lunches, try one of the DC food trucks; their locations change on a daily basis: http://foodtruckfiesta.com/
One thing I like to do with visitors is go to the rooftop bar at the W Hotel, POV. It is very expensive, so we only get one drink, but it has a great view of the White House and the Mall. You don't need reservations if you're only having a drink at the bar.

ditto all this
when my friends visited in october, we used the hometown pass on the old town trolley tours.
my friends write for a dc food blog - Eat More Drink More - http://eatmoredrinkmore.com/
it's fabulous - and i'm not that biased. jenna (on the blog) has wonderful recommendations.
Checking in so I can find this post later
Great ideas!!!
