Question for the Aussie Girls

I'd like to get our drivers licenses transferred ASAP once we get to Brisbane.  Where should we even begin to do this?  Do they have a DMV?

Also, do they take away your foreign license when they give you the Australian one?

Let me know your experiences.  Thanks!

I hold a foreign driver licence. How do I get a Queensland driver licence?

To apply for a Queensland driver licence for the same class as your foreign driver licence, you will need to:

    • complete the Driver Licence Application/Renewal form (F3000)
    • show your foreign driver licence and a recognised English translation (if required)
    • show your supporting evidence of identity including Queensland residency documents
    • declare that you are medically fit to drive the class of motor vehicle
Note: If you have a medical condition that is likely to adversely affect your ability to drive or ride safely, you are required to show a medical certificate from your doctor stating that you are medically fit to drive or ride safely.
    • pay the licence fee.

    Car and motorbike licence holders

If you are applying for a Queensland car or motorbike driver licence (class C, RE or R) and you hold, or have held within the past five years, a driver licence other than a learner licence, that corresponds to a class C, RE or R licence, granted:

    • from New Zealand or a prescribed country, you will not be required to complete a written road rules test or a practical driving test

    Prescribed Countries

    • United States of America.

  • I can't answer for Queensland but here in South Australia it was easy peasy. Although it said I had to surrender my USA DL they handed it back to me and I still have it. I just needed to go in, fill out a form, show my USA DL and two pieces of Aussie approved ID (there is a list somewhere of what they could be - one was a local bank statement and I also used my Medicare card) and pay a fee. I didn't have to take a test - either written or road. I just had to do it within 90 days of my arrival to avoid taking the tests.

  • It was super easy. I didn't sit for a test. I did not have to surrender my current driver license. I needed one piece of mail establishing my current address along with some other pieces of ID.

I went to the Elizabeth street address when I lived in the CBD. I don't know if that location will work for you. Knitty posted those links and they'll help.

  • yes i was shocked how easy it was here in NSW

I just showed them my US license, proof of address and did an eye test & they gave me a license!!

I hadn't driven on the left side of the road before EVER or drove on a roundabout - so lets just say I got honked at a lot in those first few months lol :)
