If you're on the pill, do you go off during deployments?

If so have you had any issues going off/ then on again when he comes home? I know everyone is different but I wanted to ask anyway.

Thanks.

Re: If you're on the pill, do you go off during deployments?

  • I didn't the first deployment because it made my periods more manageable but the second deployment I did and started charting because we were going to TTC shortly after he came home.

  • I stopped taking it when H deployed because I'm lazy. It was a lovely break and I had no problems going back on about 2 months before he came back.

  • when DH deploys I will stay on. I use depo and like not having any periods to worry about.

  • I went off, mainly because it screws with my body so much and I have had to switch pills every 6 months to a year. I don't think I'll go back on, because of the side effects and also because I'm considering maybe having children relatively soonish.
  • I continue taking hormonal BC while DH is away.  I use BC to control when I have my period, though, it's not solely to avoid pregnancy.  (ie: it kinda sucks having a period when on a business trip somewhere that doesn't have western plumbing everywhere you'll be going)

  • I wouldn't. My cysts are finally getting better after finding the right pill.

  • I stay on it. I don't like to go off because it regulates my period and if I go off, I would have a really bad acne breakout! Like others though, if you go off it, be sure to go back on a few months before your H comes back.
  • I stayed on the pill. I've been on the pill since I was 18 and have never stopped taking it. It's so cheap through our insurance that price wasn't an issue. H ended up coming home much earlier than expected. 3 months before he was supposed to come home, his homecoming got moved up 2 months so I only had a month notice. It would have been pretty much impossible to plan on restarting the pill.

    Photo bomb, yeah!
  • I always have stayed on it when he was gone before. This time I completely forgot to make an appointment to go back in and my prescription ran out. We plan on TTC when he gets back so it's not a big deal, but I am sad about not knowing when I'll get my period anymore and being able to control when I get it.

  • When I was on the pill I just stayed on it. I've had a history of irregular periods so I get nervous any time I go off that all the horrible things that have happened previously will happen again. Now I'm on Nuva Ring and DH is not in anymore so is never gone for a period of time in which I would want to go off of it. When we get closer to TTC I'll go off and start charting but not before then.

  • I typically don't, but I did with this most recent deployment because we had decided we would ttc once he returned so I figured I should use the deployment for my body to adapt back to doing it's own natural thing.

When I first went on BC about 10 years ago, my doctor discussed the increased risks of ovarian cancer and how it is minimal for people that stick with one method, once they find one that works well for them, and do not continuously go off and on.  She said if you are switching constantly or going on and off regularly that is when the risks are increased.  Like I said that was 10 years ago, so who knows if this information is still accurate or if I am even remembering it correctly.

PS...I haven't been around in quite awhile(and even when I was around I was a newbie) so hi again!

  • I went off it when he was gone for training, but I scheduled my IUD for a month before he got back.  If I was on the pill again, I'd quit if it was for 6 months or more.  We also have no problem using condoms if there was a surprise visit.

What's this 3 months business?  The inserts have always said you should use backup for the first week, not first few months.

  • I stop taking it during the deployments and then start again one month before he gets back. Its worked for me in the past!

The nuvaring killed my vagina. And I had to take it out for sex because I COULD feel it.

  • Mine said one week when starting on your period or near it. I did have one say the first month you should use back up.

Aside from being fat and cranky all the time I like the Nuva-ring.

I didn't gain much weight on it and the mood swings are way less then the generic of Yasmin that I was on before. Way less.

And Lemon, I only feel it during sex in certain positions so we just adjust for it.

Yeah the general guideline is 21 consecutive days of hormones to properly prevent ovulation, but when I first got on it, they said use a backup for the first two weeks. Never heard 3 months.

  • I decided to go off of it while H is at Basic, since even with my insurance it is still relatively expensive (for us right now, anyway). Never again. My cycle has always been a little weird, but it has caused me to be two weeks late, which is making me freak out that I'm pregnant, even though I have had a period since he's been gone. And I have had the worst outbreak of acne I have ever had since early high school. Face, neck, chest, back, everywhere. I want to slather on the makeup but that only makes it worse. I'm about to go back on it so that I will be good to go when he gets home, and I won't go off again until it's time to TTC.
