Cape canaveral, FL

My six year old nephew is obsessed with outer space and really wants to go.  I was thinking of taking him this summer. What do you think?  Good for a kid this age?  What is the best airport to fly into?  Another other recs around there?  I don't want to break the bank so I am not looking at other big Orlando attractions.

Re: Cape canaveral, FL

  • Definitely take him! I was a space freak growing up--when all the other kids wanted to be 'baby sitters' and 'teachers,' I wanted to be an astronaut (yeah, I was pretty popular). The time I went to Cape Canaveral and saw NASA was one of my favorite trips of my life. I was older than six--I think around 12?--but I think he would appreciate it at any age.

We also did a bit of travelling around FL to see other space-related things. I particularly loved The Astronaut Hall of Fame (http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/astronaut-hall-of-fame.aspx). It sounds boring from the name, but there is a rocket garden, there's 'ice cream of the future,' you can sit in a moon rover, and you can experience the moon's gravity using a cool harness device. It was AWESOME.

We also took a bus ride around the NASA grounds, learned about how fireants help protect it (seriously!), and saw tons of armadillos.

If you are still from Cleveland, another closer alternative would be visiting COSI in Columbus or the wonderful science museum in Pittsburgh--see how he does with that. Both have good planetariums and engaging exhibits for kids of his age. Also, the Black River Astronomical Society and Oberlin College do open star-gazing nights where you can use their telescopes or go to a 'star party.'

  • I think he would enjoy it. I don't have kids so I may not be able to judge that age.

    Airports:

    • Orlando: Probably best deals in to here due to competition. Southwest does fly here too and are not on search engines. It is about 1 hour east of Cape Canaveral.
    • Melbourne: About one hour south of Cape Canaveral.
    • Daytona Beach: About 1.5 hours north of Cape Canaveral.

    Attractions:

    • Beach
    • Astronaut hall of fame (pp)
    • Canaveral Air Force Museum and rocket garden - may be part of Spaceport tours (that changes based on security threats - you used to be able to drive on Air Force Station to get to it, not sure now).
    • Air boat rides on the St Johns River
    • Canaveral National Seashore in Titusville (30 min north of CC) sometimes has turtle walks in the summer months at night to see the sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Best chance to see them is around full moon. The best days are the day or two before full moon. There may be a place down in Melbourne beach area too that does turtle walks.

Cape Canaveral is less touristy/crowded than Cocoa Beach. There is a Ron Jons Resort up near the port and jetty park. I have not stayed there but seen it going there for lunch.

  • Definitely will be cool for him!  And it has gotten a lot better than it was when I was a child and went.  Beach time, that will be the other good thing.
  • Would you consider driving with a stop in Huntsville to the US Space and Rocket Center? That's where they do Space Camp and they have some cool things to do for kids.  It is a bit out of the way though.

Haha - I was just going to say to take him to parent/child space camp.  But he has to be 7 so you'll have to wait another year.  I just went to Space Camp and USSRC over the weekend but if you are not doing the Space Camp part, then I would recommend KSC over USSRC.

When you do decide when to go to KSC, make sure you book the Up Close Tour in advance.  You'll get to tour the VAB building and see whichever shuttle is in there.  They dont have an exact date on when that tour is ending, but one place I read said it would likely be in 2013.

Whenever I can get a free weekend day, I am taking my 5 yr old daughter who really wants to go.  Who knew a 5 year old would have such an active social life, lol.

  • Yes, he'd love it!

This was me to a tee!

  • Thanks everyone. Looks like I am booking a flight!!  I am guessing I will also need a rental car. So that is my next step.
