It is a cold and blustery day in New York, so tell me about your best vacation!
Our best vacation was last August on Turks and Caicos. We stayed at Amanyara and it was just the perfect place for us. Calm, relaxing and tons of privacy.

Re: AW your best vacation!
I'm torn - my honeymoon to Bora Bora & Moorea where the water is so clear and bright and the snorkeling is amazing.
or any trip to Disney World. Seriously, I never went as a child and as of next month I'll have gone 5 times in the last 2 1/2 years. I may have a problem.....
Ohhh... I don't even know if I could pick. I'll give a few:
1. Honeymoon in Tahiti - I took a spare-no-expense approach to this trip, and it was incredible. We spent four days in Moorea at the Sofitel in an overwater bungalow (great snorkeling right off our deck), then we flew to Bora Bora and camped out in a Four Seasons bungalow with a view of the mountain. We went to dinner at La Villa Mahana, which was delicious, and then we hired a private guide for the day to shuttle us around to the best snorkeling sites. We snorkeled with the sting rays, swam with the sharks, and had a delicious feast served on a private motu. The excursion was pricey but worth every penny.
2. Turkey and Greece - for my graduation from my MBA, H treated me to a 2-week trip through Turkey and the Greek islands. We spend five days in Istanbul, then flew out to Santorini before spending a few days in Athens. Istanbul was incredible - friendly people, great culture, delicious food. Santorini was haven on earth - we had a gorgeous suite with a balcony on the cliff-side overlooking the calderra and ate incredible food and drank lots of wine. Athens was meh and I would never go back there, but the trip was still one of my favorites.
3. Argentina - during a grad school break H and I flew to Argentina for two weeks and did white water rafting in Bariloche, hiking on a glacier in El Calafate, visiting the penguins in Ushuaia, and taking in Buenos Aires. And eating lots of steak.
And yet to go on it, but I am *so* excited for our upcoming trip this summer - 5 1/2 weeks traveling around Europe. We're going to Lisbon, Lagos (Portugal's coast), Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada, Barcelona, Nice, Monte Carlo, Venice, Lake Como, Cinque Terre, Venice, and Amsterdam (one-night stay on our way home; went there two years ago so I basically just want to eat Indonesian food again). H gave me a pretty generous budget so we're staying in some incredible hotels and I'm trying to get restaurant reservations at some very select places in Venice, Milan, etc. I am soooo looking forward to this trip - we're using it as as trial run for "longer" travel times as I anticipate that H will take 2013 off entirely and we'll try to knock off a lot of trips on my bucket list before we start trying to have kiddos.... so I hope we don't go crazy being on the road that long and living out of hotels.
I am so wanting to go to Amanyara! It was on our short list of places to get married, but we opted for Australia due to the time of year (August).
This is a hard one for me- I have had quite a few trips to French Polynesia and stayed in some of the best resorts there. My favorite is Le Taha'a. I've stayed there twice and I can't get enough of that place! I've been to Bora Bora twice and to Moorea twice as well as a few other islands (Huahine, Raiatea, Tikehau, Rangiroa.) However, most of those trips were not with my FI. I either went with my XH or one of my friends. So, taking that into account, I really loved our trip to the Seychelles and Mauritius. It took forever and a day to get there, but it was such an amazing experience. Our favorite part of the stay was on Denis Island, which is a small, eco-friendly island in the Seychelles. Such a quiet, laid back, romantic resort in a gorgeous country. We're already planning to go back, most likely also visiting the Maldives (I know- tough connections!) for our first anniversary in 2013.
I also have to mention our trips to Europe. While I'm not really an active traveler, we had some incredible experiences on those trips. I went through a European Delivery program to pick up my car, so it was so fun to drive my own personal car around and tour a few countries, not to mention such a unique experience. (Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein the first time, and Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands the second time.)
Our wedding on Wilson Island!
ooh! this is tough!! I have a few! haha :-)
1) our honeymoon to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin islands. so great!! so natural and secluded. we stayed at a great resort that had a view of Richard Branson's private island. just a great week!
2) our trip down the CA coast. We started in San Fran and spent 10 days driving down the coast on the PCH touring around and finally ended up in San Diego. such a beautiful area!
3) Ireland!! again, a gorgeous country, such great, friendly people. we had the best time just cruising around in the rental car for a week :-)

Prior to getting married DH and I backpacked Europe for 32 days. It was a blast, we left the states with our first and last nights hotel and a Eurorail pass and pretty much no plan. This was prior to everyone having cell phones so we relied on internet cafe's to make our arrangements and really got to be disconnected from the real world for a while.
My second favorite would be our organized trip to S. Africa earlier this year, never in a million years had I thought I'd be in an open air jeep in a safari and almost getting trampled by elephants! It was also our first organized trip, so I went into it a bit hesitant, but loved it.
1. Egypt: we did Cairo and Luxor and it was the most amazing vacation ever, such history and the people were so lovely. We took the overnight train between the two. I absolutely loved Luxor...I could spend weeks there.
2. Maldives/London: we did the Maldives for nearly 2 weeks and then a long weekend in London on the way home. Loved the Maldives, best beach vacation ever. It was especially nice snorkeling around our overwater bungalow. Only issue was we went in February, so packing was a bit of a challenge since the seaplane charged by weight on the luggage. I was wearing boots and a winter coat in paradise!
3. Thailand/Hong Kong: we did Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. I loved Bangkok and loved Chiang Mai even more. I would skip Phuket when we return, DH wants to go back and do the Four Seasons camp in Chiang Mai once our daughter is old enough.
So Tasty, So Yummy
australia with my gay boyfriend in 2004 (pre-DH)
prague with DH in 2006 - our first vacation together. went with my boyfriend, came home engaged
italy & prague in 2008
our trip to barcelona last november another favorite if for nothing else but the jamon iberico
My best so far was our honeymoon to Oahu this past July. We had an ocean view room and slept with the slider cracked so we could hear the waves. We had a free breakfast buffet every morning, eating right next to the ocean, with made-to-order omelettes, pancakes, pastries, meat, yogurt, etc. and wonderful local juice.
Every day was spent floating in the infinity pool that overlooked the Pacific, floating in a bean bag chair with a Pina Colada in my hand. We ate some of the best food I've ever had (the fresh fish is to die for!). I finally got to swim with dolphins. I danced the hula onstage at a luau.
We drove up to the North Shore and had Sunset Beach completely to ourselves one morning. We ate lunch at shrimp trucks on the side of the road and stopped for shave ice at Aioki's Shave Ice in Hale'iwa, a cute little surfer town.
I have never seen such a beautiful place. We are already saving up for a Maui trip in the next few years.
That's like choosing between my children! (...Especially since I'm single and have trips instead of toddlers.)
I would probably pick the Indian Ocean cruise. The Seychelles were unbelievably beautiful and even made me feel happy to spend a whole day on the beach, just admiring the natural beauty. And Madagascar was fantastic with all of its unique wildlife and beautiful coral reefs. It was like snorkeling in an aquarium, and trekking through the forest with wild lemurs in the trees was incredible. I could have skipped Mauritius, R?union Island, and the ship we sailed, but Seychelles and Madagascar alone were definitely worth it.
Antarctica is still up there, though, just because it was one of the most awe-inspiring and moving trips I've ever been on. Something has to be said for a vacation that changes you as a person and creates bonds between travelers just for having experienced it together.
I completely agree. I don't know what it is with that ham, but oh, I would eat it at every meal if I could.
right? i don't know what it is but it's so incredibly delicious!! some wegmans carry it. might we worth a trip to one . . .
I've got two!
Pre-H: My BFF and I vacayed in Florida - Miami, South Beach, Fort. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton, then cruised to the Bahamas. We were both single then and had the freaking time of our lives hitting up the clubs, beaches, shopping, and meeting men all over the place, hehe.
Post-H: Our first trip to Hawaii (Oahu, Kauai and the BI) - we were in awe and totally fell in love especially with Kauai which is now our fave vacay destination. We stayed at the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki, had an oceanfront room with a stunning view. We loved the North Shore, especially the town of Haleiwa and Waimea Beach. In Kauai, we had an oceanview suite at the Kauai Marriott (fabulous resort!) and had fun exploring the island which is so tropical and gorgeous. On the BI, we rented an upscale huge villa right on the ocean, it was heavenly. We did a day long road trip around the island, saw beautiful waterfalls & beaches, as well as the volcano park.
1998--two month trip to Israel, with some quick visits to other countries in the middle east.
2002--two month trip/study abroad in London with DH (where we met)
2011--The Caves, in Jamaica.
