A Child-Free World

I was listening to the radio this morning on my way to work. They were talking about local businesses banning children 8 and under. I was 1) shocked that they are implementing the ban in my area. 2) Shocked that many of the parents were agreeing with this ban.

I realize that it's a popular choice among the child-free, but its refreshing to hear parents admit that children are typically hellions in public (with some exceptions).

Of course, there was a couple of callers that were appalled by this. Apparently they don't want to go anywhere without their spawn. How sad.

Re: A Child-Free World

  • I find it shocking that so many parents lack control of their children that they have to implement rules like this. Your kid should be capable of behaving him/herself in a store for eff's sake.

    Agreed.

I agree. I was at the bank a couple of days ago and there was a kid going up to strangers poking them, and their mom was just laughing. Indifferent

  • What types of businesses?
...And I'm curious why they chose age 8 (vs. 7 or 9).

If your kid a brat, either teach them to be good or leave them at home!

One was a local electronics store, a hair salon, and two restaurants.

As for the age, I don't know how they came up with that.

Oh okay, that makes sense/I can justify all of those.

Electronic store = expensive if kids break things.

Hair salon = dangerous with all the chemicals/hot curlers/etc.

Restaurants = because a quiet meal without a crying child is nice.

  • Yeah, I think it's understandable at upscale restaurants and at certain theater showtimes, but banning them from stores and such seems odd to me.

I also don't understand not wanting to go anywhere with your kids. Why did you have kids if you are not interested in them? I understand that there's more work involved when you take kids along, but that's what you signed up for when you became a parent!

I actually understand the electronic store the most. When I worked at BB parents would literally drop their kids off to play with the demos we had in. There were also plenty of situations were the parents would shop and the kids would run around destroying things.

I think it's weird to not want to go anywhere with your kid, but I think it's equally weird to not want time for yourself without the kid.

  • OK, I guess I can see the rationale in certain stores, but a "you break it, you bought it" policy would probably take care of that.

    Jumping on this bandwagon.

    My Blog

    Anniversary
  • I wish there could be a movie theater in my area that did this. Adults only, or no kids after a certain time. H and I went to the movies at 9pm last Sunday and people were there with their kids in tow (young too - don't they have school the next day?!).
  • This is why I love going to Alamo Drafthouse. No children under 6 at all (Unless it's a rated G movie). It's nice. We don't have to hear screaming kids ruining our movie.

We have those here! I just checked the performing arts center we're going to tonight and that said, "no children under 5 permitted," as well.

  • I don't think the answer here is "no kids allowed". What needs to happen is kids need to behave in public. My mom had 5 kids and we knew to behave. She was a single mom and you'd think 1 adult would have at least a little trouble with managing 5 kids on her own, but nope. If one of did act up, we knew we were in trouble when we got home.

I'd flip if a random kid came up and poked me.

I completely agree with this. I will also say, that every child has a bad day, and has meltdowns. (Acutally, I would say every person, adults are usually better at handling them.) And I know growing up, both my sister and I had these days, and you know what? My parents just didn't take us out in public those days, because we couldn't functionally behave.

It kills me when parent's don't think about how a child will behave. (Not to mention those parents that don't bother to teach their children about personal space and behaving properly in public.)

Keep your eye out maybe you'll get one. We have one here and it's pretty awesome. Well, except sometimes people get a little tipsy (they serve alcohol) and then are rowdy during the movie.

  • I loved the movie theater that served alcohol where I used to live...kiddie free!

I know someone who doesn't take their kids shopping at all.  She said that she wants their childhood to be full of play and doesn't want them dragged around the mall.  I personally think it's smart to bring kids to stores to teach them how to behave.  I imagine her kids might be the types that prompt these sorts of rules.  They might not have been taught to "see with your eyes, not with your hands" and other things that my mother drilled into me when I was little.

    Agreed!

When did parents stop parenting? That is what I want to know.
