Traveling by plane with a toddler.

I'm not sure how this works. Can I check her car seat with the luggage?

Re: Traveling by plane with a toddler.

  • I believe you can check it with luggage.  We used the travel system when Paige was about 6 months old and checked both carseat and stroller at the gate for free... not that infant seat info helps you any
  • You can check her car seat or, if it is FAA approved, you can fly with it and have her sit in it during the flight.  This has upsides and downsides and we have flown internationally with our toddler trying both options.  On the one hand, the car seat is somewhere familiar (which for some kids, makes sitting still or even sleeping easier) and it is the most secure option safety-wise (unless she's big enough for a CARES harness).

On the other hand, putting a toddler in a carseat inside a plane seat positions them at just the right height for kicking the seat in front of them.  Often times, once you are in the air, you can recline the seat enough to give them more legroom.  But on take-off and landing, they'll have lots of opportunity to annoy the person sitting in front of them (and you as you beg them to stop and try to hold their flailing legs down- not that that's happened to me or anything ;-)).  Also, bringing it on the plane means that you'll have to carry it through the airport, which, if you're each bringing a carry-on and a personal item, can also be annoying.  Lastly, once it's on the plane and you're in the air, you're kind of stuck with it.  It doesn't provide much opportunity for putting up the armrest and letting your LO stretch out in your lap on a long flight.

I personally prefer flying with the seat on the plane, especially for very long flights, but it definitely has its downsides too.  If you do decide to check it, most airlines provide plastic bags at check-in that they will wrap it in to protect it.  Some won't even count it against your luggage allowances, but you'll have to check with the specific airline for that.

    Have fun!

  • For real, DO NOT CHECK THE SEAT.  Put it in the airplane seat and strap her in.  She will think she is in the car and won't be struggling to hop up and run around like a maniac.

    Agreed!

  • Are you renting a car at your final destination?  If so you can also rent a car seat from the rental car company and save yourself the hassle of lugging a car seat across the country, LOL.  I did this when I took Macy to San Fran this summer and the car seat was clean and acceptable.

    Also, are you traveling alone?

Speaking from my experience (and I always travel alone) I think traveling with less in your hands is better.  So if I had to bring a car seat, I would wrap it in a big black garbage bag, and check it.  You already have to carry a shiit ton of stuff to occupy a toddler on a flight the last thing you want to screw with is lugging a car seat on and off a plane.

    But that's just my $0.02 :)

BTW, where are you headed?  I am nosey :)
