Is this ok to ask the doctor about?

I'm having a lot of severe headaches that turn in to migraines...like, cannot even sit still, hating all light, praying for death, kill me now, omg my head is throbbing, don't speak to me kind of migraines.

I probably get at least a severe headache once a week, if not more. My mom was also prone to migraines like that pretty often, and she went on Neurontin for something else, but it also made her migraines go away.

I know it's a nerve medicine, but I wonder if it would work for me...is it worth it to ask the doctor about trying it? I hate these headaches all the time, especially when they turn in to a migraine :(

  • I'm on neurontin ( been on it since '99) for headaches ( caused by Arnold Chiari Malformation). Technically it's an antii seizure medication but it does work for headaches.

You can talk to your regular Dr. about it but they will probably refer you to a specialist. No harm in asking though.

  • I have horrible migraines, but they give me triptans and I usually treat with caffeine.  That seems to work well for me, but everyone is different.  Benadryl and ibuprofen can also work wonders.  Just depends on the type of migraine and the type of person.  I would talk to your GP about getting a referral to a neurologist, or go straight to a neurologist if you insurance allows you to do so.

  • Yes, no harm in asking. Neurontin is often used for migraine prevention. If that one is not for you for some reason, there are other preventive migraine medications that could be prescribed.

Triptans and caffeine and such are for treating the headaches after they've started. Neurontin and a number of other drugs that were originally developed for seizures are used to prevent migraines. I used to write a lot about antimigraine and antiseizure meds. I'm not up on the latest stuff, but I know that there are a number of options out there.

I used to be on Inderall (a blood pressure medication) as a prophylactic. It worked great, but I had to stop because (1) it made me fall asleep standing up, and (2) I started having chest pains. I didn't have a migraine for like 3 years with that stuff. But because of the side effects, I'm now stuck with the after-headache stuff. :(

  • Thanks, everyone :) I didn't realize it was commonly used for headaches.
