One more Q- Health Insurance

If I get the job I am interviewing for tomorrow, I will not have health insurance with it because the potential boss is considered an independent contractor. The job is for an office position in a state farm insurance office.  Do you have private health insurance? How much does it run for a couple, no children? He said he would give an additional $100 on top of pay to go towards insurance. I am not sure what is common practice, or where else to look for insurance. I checked our United Healthcare, UPMC, Aetna, and BCBS. Any other options out there? I have always had insurance through work so I am at a loss.

Re: One more Q- Health Insurance

  • I looked into this recently because a job I was looking at offered to pay me to not take benefits and it looked like I might come out ahead that way. I'm in my late 20's and had quotes from between $70 and $250. The $70 quote was for a plan where I had to pay out $5,000 my self before they would start paying, but if you only go to a doctor once a year and just want to be covered for an emergency that might be enough. I forget what my husband would cost, but it was cheaper since men never go to the doctor.

All the plans you listed are good and I would guess the rates are pretty similar. If you liked the last health plan you had through work, you could call them and get a quote that plan.

  • Another thing to consider is that, oftentimes, if you are paying your own insurance it can actually be cheaper to have individual policies, instead of for a couple/family.

I just got insurance through my job but before that I was paying $130 per month and had a $2500 deductible.  I am 31, no health issues.  I am glad I don't have to pay out of pocket for office visits anymore, as I did with this policy.

Also, my friend who is an ind. agent told me another very important thing is to make sure they cover 100% after your deductible is met, if possible.  This could save you thousands if (God forbid) you had anything catastrophic occur.
