We're going to a General's Reception next week and I don't know what to wear. M says cocktail attire. This is what I have narrowed it down to that I already own but I'm not set on any of them really because I'm pretty pale and I'm afraid I will look too washed out.
Similar to this but no belt. I think it looks too businessy and not really cocktail, but M likes it. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/calvin-klein-stretch-luxe-belted-sheath-dress/3149594?origin=category&resultback=2423
In a gold/champagne color http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/calvin-klein-stretch-satin-sheath-dress/3083479?origin=category&resultback=2423
It hits just above the knee but I'm afraid it might be too much of a party dress http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWT-BCBG-MAX-AZRIA-ONE-SHOULDER-ANIMAL-PRINT-DRESS-XS-/280735495190
I'm not against getting something new but I feel like I might have something that works already. Also, it's been 60-70 here lately so I'm not too concerened with being cold.
Re: What color goes best with pale?? Dress help
The first link for sure, & i would do black. Even if you are pale hun. I know your worry about it looking to "businessy" and this is valid because I see your point of view. However black looks amazing on tan and pale people alike. One thing you can do it wear a nice pair of earrings and then the focus goes from your face down. The second dress is not a favorite of mine because of a number of reason, to be polite I will just say the last military function I was at ... that type of dress "skinny straps" can come off a little underdressed and a little to prom-e. You are very correct with the last choice being a little to much like a party dress, however it is super cute just not for the occasion. If the military members are in uniform which I am pretty sure they should/would be I would stink with the first pick, in black maybe even a dark blue if its Air Force
I'm not either. Like you said it's a bit business-y. None of the dresses were my style but I think the 2nd one was the most cocktail-ish of them all.
I like #1 the best, and I would definitely dress it up with accessories.
#2 is okay for evening (say, after 6pm), but I would DEFINITELY wear a shawl or shrug or something over your shoulders, and make sure it's not too tight. Also, as a fellow pale-person, I would NOT go for gold/champagne, but a darker jewel tone.
#3 is out. It's super-cute, but not right for this occasion.
I'd go with either 1 or 2, depending on the time of day and formality of the event. (I've never been to a General's Reception, so I have no idea what they'd be like...)
I've got pale skin (sometimes I darn near glow!), and I stick mostly to jewel tones, if I can. Black isn't bad, but I avoid anything pale - it just makes me completely and totally washed out... It doesn't compliment my colouring at all. (pale skin, dark hair... blame it on my dad's irish genes...)
I blame my mom's Irish genes!
I bought #2 one summer when I had a nice tan and the gold/champagne looked really good on me. It's not so hot looking now! All M knows about the event is that it's his entire class, there will be a receiving line, he's wearing his blues and tie, and only 5 other spouses are attending. I'm sure I'll find out more information the day before!
I absolutely agree with all of this. Jewel tones in the winter are most definitely your friends. Stay away from champagne/gold - I'm sure it did look fabulous with a summer tan but not for the winter skin. A peacock blue would be gorgeous.
If he is wearing his blues, I'd go for dress number 2. But, a darker colour would suit you better. The first one is not quite formal enough. If you already owned it, I'd suggest accessorizing it up, to save on costs.
Maybe you can accessorize the gold dress with a jewel tone wrap/very striking jewelry? It might help with the wash-out effect...
(I'm cheap - if I have a dress that I can wear that basically meets the requirements of the event, I'd rather wear it than buy another dress. But, if you like shopping for new dresses, I'd look for something similar to dress 2 in a jewel tone.)
ETA: reading fail on my part - you do own the black dress. In which case, I'd try both on, accessorizing them when you do, and decide which you think looks better. The black dress isn't terribly formal, but would likely not stand out as not formal enough. (did that make sense? double negatives and all...)
Agreed! I like 2 best, but not in the champagne color if you are pale. I would do a darker color.
I would go with this:

or
http://www.thelimited.com/detail/chiffon-colorblock-dress/3147271 either color would work!
