Moving not travel so much

I applied to graduate school right before I found out I was pregnant with my 1st. If I get accepted, I would have to move across country and start school in the 8th month of a high risk pregnancy. I'm nervous about whether I should move and start school so I am in with my graduating class and have the baby mid-semester in a new town (moms will surely come spend a few weeks to help). That means finding a new MD, hospital, etc.

OR should I try to study at home a semster maybe online if I can. I would be the new kid in the spring semester after everyone has forged bonds in the fall, but I would have the baby here with lots of support from family and friends, my doc, my hospital. My school may not allow internet courses at the Phd level.

I know for some of you this is a no brainer to stay home and forget school, but this has been a dream of mine for 10 years to go back and finish my Phd. What would you do?

Re: Moving not travel so much

  • You need to pose this question on a parenting and/or education board, not a travel board.

  • Personally, I'd talk to my current doc, and find an OB in the area you'd have to move to and talk to them as well.  At month 8 - especially if you're high risk - you're going to want to have all your ducks in a row ASAP.  Things like getting records transferred, registering at the hospital, etc.  And that assumes a doc will even take you on as a patient given the circumstances.

I had to move when I was 20 weeks PG with #1, when DH got a new job out of state.  I had an OB lined up before I got there so that the transition went as smoothly as possible.  Even then it was involved, and I wasn't that far along or high risk.

    Good luck!

  • I would start in the spring, if I were you.  I have a Ph.D.  I don't think the "bonding" of the "class" is important at all, although this may depend on the program of course.  You'll probably have a few more years to make friends.  It's never too late to make friends.  I ended up forging more bonds with people in my specific research area, regardless which year we entered the program.  BTW, what is your field?
