Jason's grandfather did our taxes for us last year as a married couple but since he passed away in December, we're trying to decide how to file. My stepdad offered to do it for us, but I know that if we hand him our W2's then my Mom will go through them and I really don't want her knowing exactly what we make. She's the type of person who would make comments on it and I just don't want to deal with it.
So we have two options, doing them ourselves online or going to a place to pay to have them done. I feel like ours should be pretty easy to do since we don't have any children, any large deductions, etc. but I'm nervous about trying to do them myself.
So if you've do them yourself or take them to get professionally done, I want your advice/suggestions. If you do them yourself, do you find it easy? Or is it worth it to get it professionally done? If you've paid to have it done before, do you know approx. how much it costs? I'm pretty clueless about this kind of stuff.

Re: Tax Time
I'm in Canada, so my tax experience/comments may mean absolutely nothing to you, but here goes...
We also have pretty simple tax returns (no kids, no business, etc). Last year I used one of the online systems. I think it was $16.99 and it was super easy. I also had my refund deposited in my account in less than 2 weeks. I'll use it again for sure.

TTC Since January 2011 - We have bad spermIn the past I went in to H&R block, and had someone do it for me. You get a fancy little folder, and all of your paperwork is nice. It is also great to have when you need to go back and look at your tax info because it is so neat. I think they charge about $50. This year we were lazy, and decided to go with H&R online since they already had all of our info. Again that is around $50.
I did look into turbo tax, and it looks really easy on their website.
I used to do my on-line at taxact.com. It was pretty simple and I got the money refunded into my bank account in about 10 days. It was also pretty cheap to do and I usually took it right out of my refund.
Since getting married DH and I go to H & R Block because he is a self-employed business owner. It cost us a little more than I had wanted to pay, but his portion of the taxes are so time consuming making it cost more.
Hope that helps!
Thanks, I appreciate the input/info everyone! I think we're going to take it to H&R block on Monday because I have that day off. Right now they're offering free federal tax services as long as you have simple enough taxes for a 1040ez, which we did last year and nothing has changed, so we should get that done for free, and then we'll just pay for state. I figure even if it does end up costing us more than I'd like, it'll probably be worth it for the time we're saving and the potential fight we'd probably get into over trying to figure it out ourselves lol.
