Random magazine subscriptions in my name: should I be concerned?

I have randomly been receiving magazines, to which I have not subscribed.

First, it was Family Circle about 14 mos. ago...then Self last summer...and today, I received a giant copy of 'W' with my address on it. Hmm

The Family Circle I wrote off as likely a 'helpful' gift from my mom (recipes and whatnot, and it was around the holidays last year) but when the Self magazine started arriving, it made me raise an eyebrow.

When Domino folded a year (or two?) ago, they unhelpfully substituted Glamour (yaaay), so I've been receiving that for an eon, but these others I can't explain. I'll admit, we've had so much going on this year that I've sort of swept this under the rug b/c I'm not even sure that this is really a problem...

I'm about to get on the phone to see if I can figure out why I'm getting all of these in the mail, but was curious if anybody else has had this happen? Or know of a reason this should concern me?

  • I have no idea what's going on in your situation, but the same thing's happening to me.  I'm receiving Money magazine and I know I didn't sign up for it.  Weird.
  • I'd contact the magazines and figure out who ordered them asap.  Years ago, before I met him, DH signed up for this magazine "deal" with his roomate.  It's far from a deal and more like a scam.  Years later, when his initial subscriptions ran out, they started sending him all these new random subscriptions that he didn't sign up for (Boating, W, Business something-or-other, Parenting, etc) .  It was all part of the scam, I'm sure he would have been charged for them sooner or later.

  • We keep getting a bill for Cooks Country, but we don't get the magazine.  I have emailed their customer service but they are super slow to respond.
  • i had a stalker send me magazines and he sent gay porn magazines to the guy I was dating work.
  • We have a subscription to Salon.com, from which we get trial periods of magazines.
  • I started getting Bloomberg Business, Forbes & a few other magazines for free, probably due to my Economist subscription.  A lot of magazines give free subscriptions now because their main money maker is advertising and they can charge more for ads if they have a larger pool of subscribers.

This is sort of what I'm suspecting...but I got nervous after talking with a CW who's college aged son had sort of a combo of the responses I've gotten, which were scam/didn't get charged right away but did after the fact... I can't figure out how that would happen, but like I say, the whole sweeping it under the rug approach isn't doing anything to quiet the WTF vibe I'm getting every time I open my mailbox...

  • I started receiving W magazines 2 months ago - called the magazine and apparently my order from Folica.com came with a free subscription. Hooray.

  • I'd be happy to receive free magazines.

    Am I missing something?

  • I get TONS and yes, it's for the advertising.  They can say "1 million issues were distributed last month" to advertisers and such and they make more money that way.  I got about 10 different magazines over the years.  Many are not even in a language I can read.  They send them based on my ethnic last name.  I have called the magazines before, and they usually just assure me they were prepaid or free.
  • A few months ago I started receiving GQ each month. I really don't know how it started, but I know I didn't sign up for it.

  • I remember being a teen and for some reason we got Seventeen sent to our house every month for like 3 years. Never ordered it, never paid for it.

The same thing happened a few years ago with Cosmo.

This totally explains why I randomly started getting W. I was so confused.
  • Weird.  We get Handyman and Science Today, which were both gifts at one point (years ago), but now I don't know who is paying for them.  Not us!

I'd actually rather have magazines appear in the mailbox than the constant stream of random catalogs I get sometimes.

Thank you guys for this thread. I have been throwing out the Allure magizine that my husband has been receiving the last three months and I have been getting icreasingly curios/creeped out. He bought me a flat iron from Folica for xmas. THIS EXPLAINS EVERYTHING. Now I know for sure that he hasn't taken on a lover or started cross-dressing.

This explains a lot. I randomly started receiving W magazines-- what seems like every week. I had no idea where they were coming from. I thought maybe a bridesmaid or someone was sending it to me because I recently got engaged. But I also order from Folica.com so that must be why. So I guess we are not charged anything for it? It is a decent magazine-- wouldn't buy it on my own but fun to look at for a bit.
  • For about a year I got working mother and parenting in the mail.  At my parents house, where I was living as a 23 year old graduate student (I know that plenty of people have kids at 22 but it was unfathomable to me at that age...and this age at 27 haha)  My mom was kind of weird about it which was super awkward.

At one point I worked with three other people: a male with two children under 4, a female in her early 30's engaged no children, a female in her mid 30's no kids, and my in my 20's engaged no kids....and the two of us with no kids got both magazines in the mail! it was so weird!

It looks like you have been on boards here for a while now, which means you should know the unwritten rules. Do not comment on a post that is from 2 years ago- heck even 6 months ago is too old. If you have something to say, start your own thread.

  • @vikingsfan711 The post before me was from january 20th, I did not go back looking for random threads to comment on.  I assume that if a thread is showing up in the middle of a bunch of new threads when I go to the forum, it is active.  Not sure why it was necessary to be so rude towards me directly when I did not even "resurrect" the thread.
  • My Fiance was also receiving W for the longest time and we had no idea why. He also bought me a flat iron from folica.com and lots of other goodies. Now I know. Fiance is not one to read all of the find print on shopping deals.
  • @inittoquinnit‌ @Knottie37373131‌ Do not post on a dead thread! This is over 2 years old- nobody cares, these people are not here any longer.

  • @vikingsfan711 I did not even realize the thread was so old. When somebody post on an old thread it is pushed back up to the top. A few people commented after it was pushed back up so obviously it was of some interest to some people.
