We were invited on our first play date/outing today by another mom & girl from DD's school. I was beyond excited to have someone approach me, but the conversation was kind of sad. Turns out they've been living here for 3.5 years, but are moving back to their home (to a northern European country) this summer because the woman is separating from her husband. He wants to stay on in Paris, she can't wait to get home, hasn't gotten used to it here, her daughter hasn't made any real friends in the whole time they've been living here and hasn't really learned to speak French, either. But her husband is staying. The daughter doesn't know about their impending move yet, or that she'll end up in a different country than her dad.
I know these things happen, but it was really depressing.
Re: Well, that was a downer...
Sorry your first playdate was such a bust.

wow that's really sad
we have a few friends now where the dad lives in a different country to first wife & some kids - I just can't understand that - how incredibly difficult for the kids
That is a downer =/ I'm glad that you were there for her to talk to, though, it sounds like she really needed it.
It stinks that that happens so often. In my hometown in the states we had a lot of Korean families with one parent in Korea and one in the US with the kids. I had a few friends who were in that situation and they weren't fond of having their family split for so long.
