Have you checked in a lot of luggage recently?

If so I'd like to know where you were going to/from and how much it cost you.  What airline you flew would be helpful, too.

I'm trying to figure out what sounds reasonable.  TIA.

Re: Have you checked in a lot of luggage recently?

  • We checked 2 extra bags after our wedding to get our gifts from PHL to London, flew BA.  It was $50 each, they were both under 23 kg.  We tried the old we just got married these are our wedding gifts, no go at Philadelphia international, shocker I know.

  • We had 6 suitcases over Christmas between Atlanta and Manchester (UK) on Delta. We were allowed 3 free bags up to 50 lbs, and 1 free bag up to 22 lbs (lap child). We paid for the other 2. If we paid online ahead of time in the US it was like $60 a bag. At the airport it was more. Going back the online system wasn't working, don't get me started, so we paid at the airport and had to pay in Euros, and it was like 60 euros a bag.

  • Three free bags, what sorcery is this?!

I'm finding luggage policies split into to/from USA and to/from everywhere else on the damn planet.

Shockingly, to/from USA seems to be 1000000x more reasonable, rational and affordable.

  • your pretty much on target. International bag fees are way more expensive than domestic bag fees. The pp probably got 3 free bags because they were either flying business or first class OR they are elite with Delta. I get 3 free bags with United because I fly all over the freaking place for work. I am not elite with British Airways, but got free checked bags this fall because I flew business class.

You should check out luggage policies to Brazil! That place gets crazy free luggage!

I've checked a ridiculous amount lately, because of FF status. I get 3 bags total (2 up to 70 lbs and 1 up to 50 lbs), and you can be sure that I use it when I'm coming back from the good ol' Unlimited Shopping of America.

Will the company cover excess luggage? That's always been a reimbursable expense in my relocation deals. If not, I think you'll probably have to check the pricing for each of the options. They're generally pretty similar, but just glancing at a few - OMG Singapore Airlines is stingy with the baggage allowance!

Oh, no no no. 3 free bags for 3 tickets - 1 free bag each. Sorry, I should have clarified. And then we got a 4th bag for free for our lap child, but we were allowed less weight for that one.

Even Delta Diamond (the highest), and business, only gets 2 free bags between the US and Europe and US and Australia.

  • Oh and BA gives 3 free bags to their business (first club world), 2 for business (club europe), premium economy and full-fare economy (y fare) or 1 bag for economy that is not full fare.

  • When my friend moved to Germany and flew DL she was charged something like $1400 because of having too many bags and one or two of her bags was overweight. I think she had around 4 bags.

Ha, the stuff I'm seeing (that I'm envious of) says USA/Canada/Brazil.  Lucky bastards.

We've got some money to throw around, but I'd rather not use every last dime of that on insane luggage charges.

I know and they're our top candidate. :(

  • VA to NV this past December, United Airlines, $25 for the first bag and $35 for each additional per person, per flight. There were size restrictions too.
  • Good luck!

On a recent flight from Frankfurt to Abuja I entered the gate behind a man who had checked 99 pieces of luggage. I have no idea what he was doing or why he didn't ship them. But you will at least come out ahead of him!

By my rough estimate calculation that would cost $50,000.  I exaggerate not.

Would you believe me if I told you he was flying coach?

I still can't wrap my mind around what is so valuable that it must travel in 99 pieces by plane yet not valuable/contraband-like enough to deal with increased scrutiny by airport security, the airline and most of all customs at Abuja intl airport!
