Lake George, NY

I'm trying to figure out where to go for our summer vacation this year and I'm thinking I'd like to try LG in NY.  We have 2 young kids...3 and 1 so I'd like to find a place that is family friendly and close to all the attractions. If you've been there can you please recommend a good place to stay or stay away from and things to do in the area that are good for young kids. Thanks so much!

Re: Lake George, NY

  • With young kids, you'll probably want to visit Great Escape, which used to be a standalone theme park but is now part of Six Flags.  There's also some decent outlet shopping, if you're into that.  I've been to those, but haven't spent much time in the town and on the lake itself.
  • We have been staying at the Blue Lagoon for the past 20+ years.  We don't really do the theme partks or anything so much anymore, just mini golf, but your kids may be too young for that.  There is a water park there too, can't think of the name.  But staying at the lake and letting the kids play in the sand and water is fun too.  The outlets are pretty good, there is also Fort William Henry right on the lake and Fort Ticondaroga (sp) near by.
  • Lake George was our family summer vacation growing up, and we went back again this summer for nostalgia!

Places we've stayed on the lake - Melody Manner, Stepping Stones, Diamond Cove Cottages.  Diamond Cove was our favorite - they have their own little beach with a swimming area for kids.  We stayed there again this past summer and the cabins had been updated somewhat.  It's maybe a 10 minute drive into town (Lake George Village or Bolton's Landing) - plenty of family-friendly restaurants, arcades, souvenir shops, etc.  Definitely do a ride on the Minne-ha-ha boat.  You can do horse carriage rights downtown. Tons of mini golf places.  Fort William Henry is a reconstructed fort with reenactments.  Great Escape and the outlets (maybe a half-day).  There is lots of hiking around - obviously not a longer hike for kids, but there are also some short, easy trails where we saw families with children.
