Road to Hana on a rainy day?

We have out itinerary set and on the day we do the road to Hana weather.com shows a 60% chance of rain in Maui.

I read some of those roads are tricky, just wondering if it would still be fun to do.

Would you do Hana on a rainy day? Have you? Any tips?

Re: Road to Hana on a rainy day?

  • no I wouldn't. I think that would be a nightmare with the driving.  Plus, most of the fun is getting out and exploring.  I would switch itineraries with another day if possible.
  • I would still decide to go.  That side of Maui is naturally more rainy anyways.  It may rain for only 20 minutes and then stop.  We've done it twice, both times it did not rain.  Obviously the drive is better in nicer weather, but I wouldn't bag your trip just for a 60% chance of rain.

If it does rain, just take it slower, you can't go real fast on that road anyways.  If you want to get out and hike or explore (which you definitely should!) just make sure you bring proper shoes (and a maybe a spare in case they get all muddy) and a rain jacket.  Also maybe some towels to sit on in the car if you're wet.

ETA: Now if you start out and it is just pouring and doesn't look like it will let up, then I agree w/ pp, switch it to another day if you can.

  • We went on a drizzly day and it was fine.  Like pp said, I wouldn't go if it was pouring, but if its raining off and on its fine.  I think it helped keep down the crowds too.  We probably went half way to hana before we turned around.  I also second making sure you have the proper shoes!  I think i had flip flops on, not the way to do it.  Also, we loved the itinerary in the blue hawaii books (can't think of the name right now).  Have fun!
