Work Schedule WTF?

We usually get our schedules a month in advance and a month at a time.  Generally, we work one weekend a month.  When you work a weekend, you'll get days off duing the week to compensate.  But, depending on certain factors, you can sometimes end up with horrible stretches of 7-10 days in a row working.

Well, my next weekend in February ends up having me work 8 days in a row.  Personally, at about 32 weeks pregnant, this seemed like too much for me so I'm working on getting one of those days off in the middle and using one of my banked days.

Fastforward to them making the March schedule.  I knew this could be a problem again and I have a day off that I am owed for working a holiday that I can use when I want.  I e-mailed the manager who makes the schedule (before she started working on it) and arranged that I would have the Thursday off before I work whatever weekend I am scheduled in March specifically to avoid working more than 5 days in a row.  She tells me I'm going to have March 22nd off and work March 24th/25th.  Great!  Not so much.  I get my March schedule today and it shows I have off March 22nd and am working March 31st/April 1st.  So, I have a 4 day work week, have the weekend off and then come back and work at least 7 days in a row.  WTF?  I e-mail my manager and I get a reply back from a different manager saying she played with the schedule and changed my weekend based on another pharmacist who couldn't work a specific weekend.  Her bad, she'll fix it.  However, she's having a hard time making it work so I can have the Thursday off the day before my weekend.  Honestly, I don't care and think they need to make it work because I'm the one who planned ahead.  The other pharmacist waited until he saw the schedule yesterday and called and had the manager change it.

Not much going on here but my complaining.  Honestly, I'm annoyed that my weekend got pushed back a week since I will be almost 38 weeks at that point AND they gave me on calls.  If I end up going early, they are the ones who have shot themselves in the foot.  Ugh.

Re: Work Schedule WTF?

  • Oh that is so annoying! Especially the on-call part, ugh. I hope they can make it work for you. Huge kudos to anyone who has to do a job on their feet that late into their pregnancy. I could barely stand for 10 minutes by that point.

  • I would be annoyed too! They really should be planning better since you will be so far in your pregnancy. Oh well it will be their issue if you go a little early.

  • Yeah, that's just stupid.  Here you are trying to help them out by being all good and planning things out and what happens?  They're stupid.

Hopefully it can all get worked out.

  • That is frustrating.  If they give you trouble about switching the schedule, stand strong and refuse. You are right - you absolutely get first dibs on your preferred schedule as you requested it well in advance.

  • That's insane. I can't imagine working on my feet that late in my pregnancy. Well, I was already in the hospital at that point, so even more so. You are a real trooper. I would throw a fit or have a chat with the baby to screw some people over.

I lol'd at the bolded part.  If baby is as spiteful as DH and I can both be, they might just be in trouble.  Although, I hope to keep baby cooking as long as possible.

With regards to being on my feet.  My hospital job is SO much easier and I can work things out so that I don't have to be on my feet very long so it's not that bad.  Also, when I'm up on floors and being can see that I'm visibly pregant, sometimes people are nice enough to let me sit while I write orders and chart.

So, my managers solution isn't ideal but honestly, this other pharmacist just can't work the prior weekend so I'm getting screwed.  The are having work the Friday of one weekend and Sunday of the next which SUCKS but I end up being able to get days off during the week so that I don't have that long stretch.  I'm still working April 1st with on call and if I have PTL issues (fingers crossed that I don't), they will definitely be regreting that decision.

Honestly, I know they don't really think of my pregnancy and situation when making the schedule and part of that is probably my fault.  They've only known for about 9 weeks now and even though I've got a big bump going on, I'm not waddling or complaining and they know I'm still running and feeling pretty fantastic so...
