*cries*

A coworker at work just asked me if I gained weight since the wedding because I lost motivation...

*cries*...

It was because I turned down a bagel, because she didn't know I couldn't eat them. But still. Not cool :(

I mean, I have. But still, I don't want to think about it. And I don't want to think that people noticed. And it was because of my damn foot okay, lol.

Re: *cries*

  • Who says that though? That's super rude.
  • what a jerk! that's not very nice!!! Angry

it was a girl. I was totally caught off guard. I actually said yea, that I did gain weight, but it was due to my foot injury. but still, YOU NEVER COMMENT ON SOMEONE'S WEIGHT UNLESS IT'S TO SAY THEY LOST IT...arg :(.

  • old me would have had an awesomely mean snarky cutting comment to whip back at her. (If she were unmarried, then something along the lines of "at least I had motivation in the first place unlike you.") Nicer now-me would just be upset.

    Holy crap rude!

It's totally cultural then and isn't meant as rude.

Weight is not an off-limits topic to Asians. The first thing my mom usually says to me the moment I land or she lands and sees me in baggage claim is: You've gotten so fat! Or, you look so nice and skinny.

Back when I lived in Korea, people would randomly talk to me in stores or restaurants I'd go to or on the subway and comment on my looks, my weight, the clothes I wear. Back when super baggy jeans were in style, one old man whacked at my legs with his cane and commented on the excess fabric. :P

So, I mean, it still probably totally hurts if you're not used to that kind of 'concern' (and really it does come from a cultural place of concern), but at least she didn't really mean to be rude by it? I don't know. XD

  • Booooo to your coworker!

I am amazed at how rude people can be.  This morning H and I were in an elevator with our tax guy making small talk about the company H works at and how the company culture there is undergoing some changes - nothing rude or obnoxious or showy or anything where he'd be construed as annoying (IMO) - and as we're getting out of the elevator the one other guy in the elevator (who didn't acknowledge us) says loudly, 'What an effing worthless website' in reference to the company H works at.  I was so floored I couldn't come up with a response on the fly!

I honestly think there are just a lot of unhappy people out there who can't stomach seeing others happy and like to put other people down.  Maybe your coworker just is from a different culture where that's normal, but honestly - whenever I encounter a jerkface like the guy from the elevator or your insensitive (or culturally unaware) coworker... I just think, 'You must be very miserable to want to hurt someone you don't even know or don't know that well.'

From your engagement and wedding photos you shared a while back, you have nothing to worry about!

Yep, I may be 15 pounds or so bigger, but I still don't think I'm that big *cries*

Good to know it may be cultural, at least that gives me an understanding of what's going on.

  • I think you look great.  Who cares if you've put on a few pounds since your wedding?

    1.  Your H loves you just the way you are.

    2.  If you *are* overweight, we can't tell from the pictures / way you dress.

    3.  I'd rather be fat and happy than hungry and miserable.

    4.  It will all come right off once you can beginning running again.

  • WTF?? You look amazing! If you've gained weight you sure don't look it, you look fabulous!
