Carpet vs. Hardwood

We have been in our home for almost 2 years and slowly we are making it ours. The outdated fixtures have been replaced.  Every shred of floral wallpaper is gone.

Finally we are up to getting rid of the blood-red carpeting in the bedroom and office and the bubble gum-pink in the master.  At first we had planned to re-carpet everything, using our tax return money this year.  My father owns his own hardwood flooring business and has offered to stain and refinish the floors underneath- which are oak.  I am the daughter of a floor man but I've always liked carpeting in bedrooms.

My mind might be changing b/c #1 am I crazy? this will probably cost a $200 gift card for Dad.  #2 carpeting is more expensive than I thought and our money can be used elsewhere and #3 it's been brought to my attention that people skeeve carpet and hardwood is cleaner.

Which do you prefer? Do you have hardwood in your bedroom? Are you always swiffering? Any cons?

Re: Carpet vs. Hardwood

  • Almost my whole house is hardwood. The kitchen and bathroom are like a peel n stick tile over old linoleum until we can find funds to upgrade. But all bedrooms, living room are hardwood. I love them. Super easy to clean up, no worrying about staining. It can be alittle chilly in the winter but i always wear slippers anyway. I dont feel like im always swiftering, i usually vacumn once a week, if i miss a week i will see some dust bunnies but its just me, DH and a cat right now so not alot of traffic.   Also you can always put down area rugs in the bedrooms if you feel its too much with the all wood.  Ive just always liked the clean, crisp feel of hardwoods.

  •  we are ALWAYS using the swiffer/wet jet and vacuum. we were going to put a carpet in our bedroom but i lost my job so that idea was out. but i would revisit the idea again if i get a job this year.

  • Im all about hardwood. Carpet skeeves me out. Hardwood is easy to clean, doesn't stain and you can always warm a room up with an area rug if you need. And its def good for re-sale value of your house.
  • We have the Pergo (floating floor) on the main level and carpeting upstairs.  The carpet was installed right before we moved in, so it didn't skeeve me.  I thought the wood floor was too much so we have big area rugs for the dining room and living room.  I love the carpeting in the bedrooms and going up the stairs, but if it wasn't already installed I wouldn't have put the money into it.  If it was me, I'd probably save the money and go with the wood floors because I think it will add value to the house and as people have said, you can always get an area rug if you want to "warm up" the area.

This although my bedrooms currently have carpet cause they came that way but when their done for I'm going to do hardwood and area rugs like the rest of the house.  I have light colored floors, no kids, and a small cat so the floors get cleaned every other week.

  • We have new carpet in our master we replaced the nasty stuff that was there but didn't do hardwood Bc there was only plywood underneath the old carpet. We have carpet in all the bedrooms come to think of it new in our room and the babies and a runner on the staircase. I vote do hardwood with a rug. We have all hardwood on the main floor and a slobbery boxer and I run the roomba often and clean the floor once a week

  • I love hardwood for the same reasons as pp have said.  It will give you great resale value for your home.  Given the low cost of your situation I say go for it.  You could always add an area rug if you wanted some type of carpeting.  With that said, we don't have any in our bedrooms just yet because the house came with carpeting.  We have hardwood in our dining room, hallway, stairs going up and upper landing.  we haven't done the rest of the house just yet due to cost reasons.  I'd love to eventually do the rest of it to match.
  • I've always preferred hardwood in the common areas and carpetting in the bedrooms. It just gives that warm, cozy feeling. However, being that you have the "daddy hook-up" , I'd definitely go with hardwood if I were you.  You know it will be professionally done and maintainned with good care. You can always get a plush area rug for way less than wall to wall carpetting.

  • Since you have a hookup I'd do hardwood all the way.

This....Get an area rug if you want for the bedroom. We have hardwood and tile but, the carpet looks like crap. It's on the steps and in the hallway. So, everywhere high traffic. It looks worn and there are a couple stains I just can't get up. Hardwood all the way!

  • I agree with everyone-I'd do hardwood and get an area rug.  We currently have carpeting throughout and are hoping to replace a lot of it with hardwood when we have the money.  We will probably keep carpeting in the bedroom just to save money though.
  • Thanks for the feedback!  We've already ripped up one room of carpet and found treasures under the padding----an old baseball card, a yellow marble and a Q-tip- EWWWWW!
  • I prefer hardwoods and would just use an area rug in the bedroom to warm it up a bit.

We have wall to wall carpeting in our bedroom now and I loathe it.  It's a small room, so moving the bed around to really vacuum well under the bed is a PITA and I never feel like it's clean enough.  With hardwood, I'd just be able to pass a mop underneath and see that it was clean or, move the rug out a couple of times a year to give it a thorough cleaning.

  • Wow, I'm late on this but I kind of feel the opposite of everyone else. I like the way hardwood floors look in living areas, but like carpeting in the bedrooms.  One of the big reasons I dislike hardwood floors is the last house I had them in had an unpaved driveway so there was constantly sand and dirt and it would end up feeling gritty no matter how many times i swept, vacuumed, swiffered and mopped.
