Miss You Guys

I wish I could nest more....school takes everything outta me and when I get home, I crash.

A lil update:

The school is easing me into the classroom, so I haven't fully taken over yet, which is nice.

So far it's hell. Buttttt I don't really want to post more than that on the internets. Willing to share...just not in a public forum.

I am trying my best to hold strong and just keep going back each day. And I am just keeping my hopes up that each day might get a little bit easier.

Miss you guys!!!!

I am going to check out Vision Quest, it is cheap but might do the job. I prefer to be outside when I can. I don't know if they have classes though.

We have a membership at Vision Quest.  I've only ever been to the one in Edmonds (used to be a Mieko's).  It's decent, and pretty cheap. I have an old Mieko's membership, but one of DH's coworkers just got a new membership, and I guess for $50/month you get personal training and a nutritionist, which sounds pretty awesome.

  • sarack, i did send you a fb message.

  • Teaching is hard, even in some of the best schools.  I don't know what district you're in, but certain districts will be even harder.

Also, try to remind yourself that your first teaching job will be your hardest, for so many reasons!  But you can do it!

What grade level are you teaching?

I think I picked the hardest school to be in for my first year. The only thing harder might be NYC or LA.....and that's only a slight exaggeration.

I am teaching 6th grade. In a class where the last teacher quit b/c she couldn't handle them and they broke her and she lost it on them. Right now, I am in survival mode, trying to get down the management, so I can actually try to teach.

I want a PT, but is the nutritionist going to tell me I can't have wine? I don't want to pay someone to tell me the truth!

I am not a teacher so I don't have advice but be strong! Take care of yourself too...

Sounds a lot like my first teaching job, but I had 8th grade.  I know it sounds a little cliche', but it really is all about the classroom management.  I wish I had brilliant suggestions for you, but all I've got off the top of my head is the rule of proximity....just keep moving around the room.  :)  Good luck!!

  • I hope it gets better soon! I agree with UW, teachers are very special. It's too bad they are very underappreciated. Just keep your head up and stay strong! Sounds like you are doing a great job of it. I think it will get easier day by day.
  • The first days are the hardest -- and if the kids are of the experience that adults don't stick around, then they are trying to scare you off, before they bond with you... be consistent, be calm (on the outside!) and have clear expectations.  It's hard, but it will pay off!  I hope the school continues to give you the support you'll need during the transition.  It sounds like a particularly challenging first teaching job (age, circumstances), but you can do it!

  • My mom teaches in a really hard area. Very low socio-economic level, Army kids, broken homes, very diverse culturally... all of it. Something she does is to give the kids a lot of respect (since they don't get it at home most of the time) and love. Respect by calling them "Mr. Smith" instead of "Johnny", talking to them like they're adults (and therefore respectable), and showing love by being understanding that they might be acting out because they didn't get breakfast or a good lunch, or they had to stay up all night because their parents were fighting and couldn't get a good night's sleep. Of course every situation is different, but once they figured out that she wasn't out to get them, that she just wants to help them be successful, then they start to behave better (and usually just in her class, haha) because they know she's on their side (most of the time - if they act up, she will put the hammer down LOL).
