Hi there

I usually post on the NJ board, I'm remarried recently after a heartbreaking divorce.  I have a question...My ex filed and handled everything...If I go to the court where the divorce was finalized, will they have a copy of the documents?  I need them to go see a lawyer about custody, and can't find them.  I thought I could take a drive to the courthouse before I go see the lawyer...will they be there?

Re: Hi there

  • :::scratches head::: The courts never sent you anything after the divorce was final? Not even a copy of the judgment prior to being finalized?

I would call the court clerk prior to going there, so they can make sure they have what you're looking for. I would be prepared to pay a fee to get a copy of your divorce papers.

I'm just shocked you don't have a copy to begin with....I wanted to frame mine lol.

  • I don't know if it varies by state/county or whatever but when I went to the courthouse I was able to get a copy of mine.  Make sure you bring cash, they might charge and might not take ccs.

    Completely!

  • LOL, I do have a copy!  My ex filed a motion that I agreed to to be added to the divorce agreement, and I want a copy of that.  I didn't get one for some reason...They should have all documents on file, right?

Yes, if it was actually filed with the courts they'll have a copy.

  • Yes but I would still call first. What county are you in?  I know Essex county is having major issues right now w a judicial freeze so the courts there are all messed up. Call first but they will have it on file.

  • In my county they don't send out hardcopies at all! I had to purchase a digital copy of my divorce decree on the county's website after it was final.
