We are planning a 10 day vacation to Scotland and London this Fall. Any hotel recommendations, sight seeing recommendations or travel recs? This is our first time across the pond. DH wants to golf at St Andrews sonwe will be in that area of Scotland. Thanks!
Re: Scotland/London
Has he researched the courses at St Andrews? If he hopes to golf the Old Course ("THE" course people think of when they think of St Andrews), then be prepared to pay approx $200 USD in the fall for a round plus around $50 USD for clubs. Also, I believe there is a ballot system of getting a tee time. I'm not too sure about how that works, though. So, just have him be prepared to either spend between $250-$300 for golf or not to even get a tee time.
Aside from that, I dont have any recs for Scotland. Depending on your budget, the Kensington area of London is fantastic for staying/playing. Everything is very easy to get to via tube, so even if you stay somewhere outside your "ideal" visiting area, you can still get around and see what you want. The Tower of London is a must-see IMO. The Victoria and Albert museum is beautiful. Shopping (or window shopping) at Harrods is fun. Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park is lovely. The Portobello Road market on a Saturday morning for trinkets, people watching and food is great! Arg, now I want to go back to London!
Playing at St Andrews isn't super easy or cheap, I've never done it and don't knowanyone who has but you should definitely book as soon as possible (http://www.standrews.org.uk/Home.aspx)
What are you into? Cities? Hiking? Are you planning on renting a car? Is the 10 days including travel time? What month are you travelling?
I live in Edinburgh, Scotland so can help with the Scotland part once I know what you're considering. Edinburgh is a fantastic, beautiful city and I thoroughly recommend spending a couple days here but the true beauty of the UK in general is in the countryside.

Ditto on the St. Andrews info from previous posters.
Other than that, I can really only offer London recommendations because the one time I went to Scotland, they had a massive blizzard and we were snowed in the whole time. All the big sites are of course things you'll want to see (Tower, Westminster, the Eye, Buckingham, etc.). But some of my favorite London experiences have included the Royal Mews (not as popular as the palace itself, but attached to the back of the Buckingham property. It is a working stables and people live there so it is a fun glimpse into a "mini-culture" as well as seeing the horses and carriages the royal family uses). Portobello Rd. is fun - a great place to go and find a little cafe and people watch. Hampstead is a nice venture outside the city center. Also, I recommend a trip over to Greenwich and the Royal Observatory; going by boat on the River Thames is a fun way to get there. Don't forget to catch a show in the West End while you're there too. HIGHLY recommend Wicked. Just saw it at the Victoria Apollo this past November and it was fabulous
Really, there's a ton you can do in London and you're sure to have a fabulous time. I've been five times and still haven't seen it all.
