Amsterdam: 2 Nights (Need Food Recs)

I will be in Amsterdam for just two nights this month.

Do you have any restaurant recommendations for me?

Price is not an issue, although making reservations at this late date may be.  We have no major dietary restrictions, and we enjoy low-end and high-end meals.

Thanks!

Re: Amsterdam: 2 Nights (Need Food Recs)

  • We went to an Italian restaurant that the girls here recommended that we really liked.

Incanto...you will reservations though that should be made a few days in advance.

    It was excellent.

  • Low-end - total local hangout - Cafe Bern in Nieumarkt Square. Cash only. You have to call to make a reservation (no website but you can find the number via Google.)  Absolutely fantastic steak (entrecote) and cheese fondue. Coupled it with some Dutch witbier or Heineken.

  • No particular restaurant recs, but you have to have the croquettes when you're there.  I still crave them years later.

  • Thanks for the recs thus far.  I really appreciate them.
  • I highly recommend you enjoy an Indonesian rijsttafel while you're there. We tried Sama Sebo.

Dutch pancakes- a must-do.  There are a lot of places. We ate at a place in Dam Square, I can try to find a link.

We really enjoyed this neighborhood steak place- no tourists, kind of near the Museumplein.

  • Blauw aan de Wal (near Red Light District): Small, limited menu, local, very nice, and reservations a must

An Indonesian Rice table. We went to Indra Pura because it was convenient to where we were meeting some local friends. Probably not the best one but we really liked the food and had a great time. Kind of like Indonesian-influence tapas.

  • Get marinated herrings from a deli and eat on the street.
  • Red - nothing on the menu except steak and lobster.  It is fabulous.

Cafe de Klos - awesome ribs.  Very much a locals place off Leidesplein.  They have a bar across the street for some interesting flavored jenever (dutch liquor)

Momo - very trendy and has really good atmosphere

Pancake Bakery for pancakes get there when it opens it fills up quickly

Van dobben for friets and croquette off Rembrandtplein (this is a fastfood type of joint and croquettes are deep fried but fun for a quick lunch)

d'Antica - get the paramsean spaghetti it is amazing and they set it on fire :)

Golleum for drinks (don't eat there but they have an amazing selection of Belgian beers)

If you're into eating in the dark C'Taste (it is a restaurant run fully in the dark by blind servers - it is really interesting and you have to completely rely on your senses to figure out what you're eating - set menu)

De Jong Dikkert is in Amstelveen - you would need to take a cab but it is a restaurant in an old dutch windmill and I believe it is Michelen starred...The meal is amazing and worth the trip to Amstelveen to eat there.  Very pricey though.  The service is outstanding.

Restaurant De Kas - if you're going to drop a lot of money on a meal I highly highly recommend this one.  A lot.  They have their own greenhouse where they grow most of their veggies and spices.  The menu is constantly changing and always fresh and amazing.  It is also an unbelievable place to eat.  Absolutely beautiful.  It is about 50E a person for just the meal but worth it.  If I had no budget and only one night in Amsterdam, this is where I would eat.  They even have a special chef's table where you can watch the chef in action.

If you want to search by neighborhood/cuisine/price, I used this website when I was a meeting planner/EA in Amsterdam:

I know you asked for restaurants and not sight seeing but if the weather is good, sign up for a Saint Nicholas Boat tour.  It is donation only and the boat is not covered so they only go in good weather but it is much more personal than the big huge canal cruises run by companies like Lovers (nothing wrong with the lover's canal boat cruises, this one is just 100 times better).  You can bring a picnic lunch with you.

I also loved the country bike ride with Mike's Bikes.  It takes you on some really good views of the city while riding a bike.  It takes you to a cheesy (pardon the pun) cheese making farm and past the Amstel river and a windmill.

Have an awesome time.  I lived there for three years (and just moved back a few months ago).   The city has an amazing vibe and you'll have a great time.

If you have time for late night drinks, we used to go to a brown cafe called Cafe Stof in the red light district to watch the red light windows.  The only set back to this place is you can smoke inside it so you'll come off stinky but it is a good place for people/hooker watching and a beer!

There is also a prostitute run tour of the red light district that is very interesting and takes you into a red light room.  Don't lie on the bed, they are actually rooms (I learned that the hard way).

EDIT: I just saw you said this month.  It is probably going to be cold as hell so my recommendations for stuff to do aren't really a great idea :)  Sorry!

We went to Indra Pura as well and I loved it - so much so that I booked a one-night layover on our flight home from Europe so that we can go again in July.  The Indonesian Rice table is amazing.  Indra Pura was really good, albeit slightly expensive (compared to the rest of the places in Amsterdam).

I second those two, yum! Also a definite vote for going for an indonesian rijstafel - we used to go to one on either Korte or Lange Leidsedwarsstraat (right next to Leidseplein) that was yummy but I can't remember the name of it or which of the two streets it was Tongue Tied
