Officially on my way...

2 weeks of packing, 5 hours of moving from the apartment to a storage unit, 3 suitcases, and 1 overweight fee and I've completed the first leg of my journey to moving to China. First up was a stop in Ohio to drop off one of my cats with my parents. I'll be here for a week (praying that my cats can get along with their cats so they can stay here as long as I need them to!!!) then next Thursday is my flight to Shanghai. Can't believe it's really happening!

Guess I'll be a true International Nestie very soon! Just wanted to share and this seemed like an appropriate forum to do so!

  • I like your blog.  I'm not much of a cooker but I like the lay out and think it is pretty :)

    Good luck on your move!

Well thanks!! I hope I can still keep up with it while I'm living in China! Flour, sugar, butter, and cream seem harder to come by. Haha :)

  • This is an appropriate forum for sure! Congratulations and good luck with your move.

Good Luck with the move.  And with missing your kitties.  I had to leave my kitty with my parents when I moved to Australia last year.  That was the hardest part of the move for me.

And -- part of the fun of moving internationally is adapting favorite recipes to the ingredients available locally.  I know I have had a ton of fun.  Just a hint, if you packed all your US measuring cups and spoons, pick up a cheap set to take with you.  It's far easier to use the US measuring cups for US recipes than convert everything -- especially as in Australia, teaspoons are 1/4 tablespoon not 1/3.

And, if you need it, I find this website invaluable for converting from volume to weight -- http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/cooking-conversions/cooking-conversions-calculator.aspx

I also have a permanent tab on this site for ingredient substitutions, just in case I can't find something, which is far too common.  http://www.landolakes.com/TestKitchen/TipsAndTechniques/IngredientSubstitutions.aspx

  • Ooooh, exciting!  I've never made a move like that (came here to study and ended up staying) so I can't imagine the excitement/nerves you must be feeling.  How exhilerating.  Enjoy the trip and settling in.

  • You must be feeling so excited!

Good luck with the rest of your move!

  • ????!

Your move sounds a lot like ours! The only difference being that instead of flying, we rented a mini-van for the one-way trip from Texas to Indiana to drop off my cats at my parents' house. That and we were headed to Beijing instead of Shanghai.

Good luck with the onward journey!

The part in bold says it all. It has absolutely without a doubt been the hardest part for me. And I say that after packing our entire apartment by myself and doing all the leg work of moving on my own.

Thanks for the tip on conversions and substitutions!

Thanks! My parents told me when I arrived to not worry about my cats, that they would make sure they are taken care of. So I feel better. I just want them to get along so that all the "taking care of" happens at their house!
