Tipping & AIs

I have read some mixed opinons on this and was wondering what your thoughts are.  When staying at an AI, do you tip?

Who do you tip?

Approximately how much?

TIA!

Re: Tipping & AIs

  • You most definitely don't have to and it is not expected, but we definitely saw people doing it here and there. By the time we went to our second AI, we only tipped one server in particular.  You could tell he was working his *ss of for us and was especially helpful.  He cared about what he did, made friends with us, and went the "extra mile".  We saw some other people treating him like crap so we felt we wanted him to know that he was appreciated.  Sometimes I think they get stepped on, etc. It is totally up to you, but they will not refuse it either.  Also, I overheard some of the ladies in the spa talking about their home life , families, work etc. and it was rather enlightening.  They came from really bad areas and travelled a long ways to work everyday just to have a job at an AI so they could get out of the hole.   Given that, we only tipped a few servers that went way above and beyond. • Every AI I've evey stayed discourage tipping because it's suppose to all-inclusive.  However, if someone was extra nice or really paid attention to us, then we tipped, anywhere from $1-$10 (the $10 would usually be at the end of the week).

  • We tip the bar tenders/cocktail waitresses. Usually $3 on our first trip to the bar of the day and after that a dollar maybe every 2 or 3 orders.

We tip our room maid $2/nt to ensure our room is turned down at night; fresh linens, etc.

We also tip our waiter at dinner menu restaurants; usually $2 or $3.

  • We tipped at the beach and pool about every other drink. And at breakfast, lunch and dinner depending on service. They always seem very appreciative. Especially the beach and pool waiters. After a couple days, they'll remember your drink of choice and just bring it to you. We haven't in the past, but started leaving a tip for housekeeping.

  • Yes I did plenty. 10-15 dollars a meal, 2-3 dollars a drink, 5 dollars daily to the maid. As a result I always got the same waiters for my meals, and I never waited in line for a drink.

  • We do not tip.

    All-inclusive = ALL-inclusive.

  • We always tip.  Those people work their tails off -- and we appreciate that, so we tip them.  Generally we tip room service delivery people, housekeepers, minibar attendant, servers (meals and drinks), and bartenders.  Housekeepers $2 - $3 per day, minibar attendant $1 - $2 a day, room service $2 - $3 (we don't have them bring it in the room and set it up), bartenders $1 per drink (drink servers the same), and usually $3 - $5 for lunch and $5 - 10 for dinner.

  • we've only been to an AI once and we did tip.

A buck for drinks most of the time. ( we were in the pool and he knew what we were drinking so brought it to us there...no tip..we were IN THE POOL.)

At breakfast buffet a few dollars, lunch if we had it the same and dinner anywhere between 5-10.

    Housekeeping 3-5 per day.

    We had EXCELLENT service!

  • We usually gave $1-$2 per meal and $1 every few times they brought us drinks.  We tipped housekeeping a couple of dollars per day.
  • Thanks so much, appreciate your thoughts!
