Parents and step parents UPDATED

Since we need something to discuss here:

I learned today that state licensing requirements allow a daycare center to leave school aged children unattended for up to 10 minutes at a time. School age refers to Kindergarten to 13 years old, all mixed together. If you are a parent with a child in daycare:

1) Did you realize this?

2) Are you ok with this as a general practice?

3) on a scale of 1 to how mad would you be, if your kid told you on multiple occasions that a teacher picked them up by the arm and hurt them and they daycare's response was to keep your kid away from that teacher

Re: Parents and step parents UPDATED

  • 1) Did you realize this? Nope.

    2) Are you ok with this as a general practice?  I think I might be OK with it if it were only the older kids, but I think leaving younger children unattended for that long is probably not wise.

    3) on a scale of 1 to how mad would you be, if your kid told you on multiple occasions that a teacher picked them up by the arm and hurt them and they daycare's response was to keep your kid away from that teacher   That is f-ed up.  I would definitely be reporting the daycare and teacher to DHS and finding a new daycare immediately.

  • 1. No 2. Depends on the situation. 3. Oh hell no! I would be livid and my child would go elsewhere. Also, I'd report that immediately.

  • 1) Did you realize this? No.

    2) Are you ok with this as a general practice?  No--a 5 year old shouldn't be left unattended that long.  It's not another child's responsibility (older or not) to watch another child.

    3) on a scale of 1 to how mad would you be, if your kid told you on multiple occasions that a teacher picked them up by the arm and hurt them and they daycare's response was to keep your kid away from that teacher.  Furious. Watch out, mama bear comin' through!

  • I Reported it to the director and her response was that he's not allowed to go to that teacher's room anymore.

His dad just bought a house literally next door to the daycare, so he doesn't want me to withdraw him.

  • Maybe you need to remind him that his son's safety and well-being should trump his convenience.

I would definitely file a complaint with DHS.

  • DHS apparently allows the 10 minutes unsupervised thing. I reported all of this to their district manager so I'm sure absolutely nothing will change. I don't have dates and times of the other allegations for a DHS report at this point.  Ugh

I agree with this. We added 15 minutes to our commute every morning because of some issues with DS' old daycare, but he's doing SO much better at this new place that waking up half an hour earlier every morning is fine by me [and him].

I can't believe kids can be left unattended up to 10 minutes. That's not OK.

  • Eff his convenience.  Your son should never be hurt by a teacher yanking his arm--completely unacceptable response.  I'd switch him the minute you found an opening.  I'm sure the director is agitated now if she disagrees with your thoughts on how they handled that particular teacher.  It would make me nervous that they were going to take their frustration and aim it toward my kid.  I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but that would be my thought process if I were in your situation.  I'm sorry Wendy, that really sucks.

  • Ugh. I have those same concerns. There are some great teachers (like his regular teacher) and I hate to uproot him but wtf.
  • And they kicked us out of daycare permanently for complaining. Found out at 5:30 pm today, effective immediately.

For the record, since I have zero obligation to protect their identity, I'm referring to The Childcare Network, formerly New Horizons Child Development Center at 240 and Sunnylane.

  • I guess the bright side is that you didn't have to convince your ex to switch daycares.

I would go ahead and make the complaint to DHS.  Even if you don't have the exact dates and times, it will go in their records for people to see who are considering using them in the future.

WHAAATTT?!  Not that you wanted C to stay there, but that's asinine that they kicked you out.  I'm sorry you've been dealing with this.  I hope you're able to find an excellent daycare for C very soon.

  • 1) Did you realize this? I did know about this since I found out when we had a problem with a past daycare that we were at.

    2) Are you ok with this as a general practice? Totally not ok.

    3) on a scale of 1 to how mad would you be, if your kid told you on multiple occasions that a teacher picked them up by the arm and hurt them and they daycare's response was to keep your kid away from that teacher I would be furious that someone would do that to my child and they would have to deal with my wrath.

I'm so sorry Wendy that that happened to you and to your son. I know it's really difficult to find a great daycare where you feel comfortable leaving your child and trusting those people. I can PM you the name of where we go. M loves it there and we haven't had any problems at all.

  • Please do Ami (and anyone else who would recommend their place).  I would like someplace on the (far) SE side if possible.

This is just me, but I would call a news station to report on this and f*ck them over. They are d-bags.

I know a lady who operates an in-home daycare in near 59th & Sooner (she's a little older but has been doing it like 25+ years). I've used her a couple of times for my kids (day drop-off) and she's reasonably-priced - $80/wk/kid. lmk if you want her #.

  • WHAT? They kicked you guys out? That's absolute BS. I hope you find something soon...I can't believe that.

Thanks! Unfortunately they don't have any openings for 4 year olds.  Another friend had great things to say about your place too.
