Explain to me moving yourself or being moved
This time next year will be our first PCS (DH goes to basic in July). I know we have 2 options. Moving ourselves or having a company come and move us. But can you guys enlighten me on the details? Like if they come and move us do we just drive and to where we're going and they meet us there with boxes, if so what's the difference between that and us just renting a Uhaul and driving there with our stuff? I originally thought if you chose for a company to do it then you'd fly to your duty station and your stuff (including your car) would meet you there. But now I know if your in the US then you're responsible for your car. SO, what are the benefits of either side of the coin?
TIA!

Re: Explain to me moving yourself or being moved
Benefits of someone else packing are that the company packs my house and insures all my stuff and I don't have to worry about whether or not my H breaks anything coming down the stairs or driving down the interstate. You can claim the weight in your vehicle for what you move yourself - last time we made a couple hundred dollars after gas money.
At least for us it is convenience. I don't want to pack everything and be responsible if something breaks. If the movers do it, it's all on them.
If you do a TMO move they come in and pack up everything in your house, load it on the truck, drive it to where you're going, and then unload the truck at your new place. If anything needs to be taken apart they put it back together for you, and they are responsible for any damage that occurs during the move. You and your H are responsible for getting yourself and your cars to your new duty station, and will get DLA and per diem pay based on how many days it "should" take you to travel (based off the mileage difference between your current and new location). I will only do TMO moves because I absolutely hate packing and loading so I love that I can have someone do it for me. The downside is that sometimes it can take a long time to get your stuff. I just got mine delivered and it took about 2 and a half weeks from my packout in WA to my delivery in VA. My friend who I moved with got packed out 2 days before me and won't get her stuff for another week still, which will be almost a full month (not normal).
A DITY move means you pack everything up yourself, rent a uhaul or similar and move it yourself to your new location. You weigh your truck and turn in all receipts to be reimbursed. Supposedly you can make more money this way, but from what I've been told the military is getting much more strict on how much money people make from DITY moves. Also you can have your HHG immediately with you, instead of waiting on the truck.
If you want to ship a car you would likely have to do that out of pocket. Because of our current move situation everyone in the command was allowed to ship one vehicle here which was great, but not the usual. When we PCS'ed from NY to WA we paid out of pocket to ship my Jeep and H and I drove together in his car.
You may also have the option to ship both vehicles out of pocket (if you have more than one) and get flights paid for. I have never looked into it for us, but I know for this current move at least we could have had flights paid for instead. If that's the route you go you would only get 1 day of per diem pay since you're only traveling 1 day.
Thi,s partial DITY ws our best option
Also, to add....
When you wait for the truck at the new duty station, you aren't necessarily stuck in a dinky hotel room eating Taco Bell for a week. You should be able to stay at TLF (Temporary Lodging Facility) on base and that should have everything you need to get you through the week or so it might take to find a house and get your stuff. It's basically a large suite with a kitchenette or full kitchen.
We are doing a partial DITY this summer. They are going to come pack and take all of our stuff and on my way out I will get my van weighed with all of our "essential" belongings that I'm bringing with us.
ETA:
Since I noticed the cutie in your siggy...at TLF they will provide a crib or pack n play. At the TLF we stayed in when we got here they had a pack n play, high chair, bed rails ,and even toys that you could borrow. Once you find out where you're going, call TLF and see what they provide. The less you have to take with you, the better!
We are also fans of TMO moves, and packing the essentials in our vehicle(s) to drive. We didn't make any money moving that way, but the lack of stress and hassle of packing, loading and unloading a truck was worth it for us, especially since we know when we get to a new duty station, there isn't always people there to help with the unloading; DH and I could, eventually, do it all ourselves, but not without a lot of struggle, frayed tempers and a few broken items, I'm sure. And that was before there was an infant under foot!
THIS is very helpful info! I hadn't even thought about where he'd sleep! Ha! My head is like a sponge right now just absorbing everything! Thanks guys for all the help!
