Barcelona - Casa Batllo vs Casa Mila
If you were only going to tour one (either Casa Batllo or La Pedrera (Casa Mila)) while in Barcelona, which would you choose & why? We?re having a hard time deciding b/c they both look really cool. Maybe it?s worth the time & money to do both?
TIA
Re: Barcelona - Casa Batllo vs Casa Mila
They are right across the street from each other so you could easily do both.
I went to Casa Mila when I was there. I loved the view into what it was like to live there. It is still a residence. The fact that you can get on the roof and see the eixample district is also beautiful.
If you are a sci fi fan, they say George Lucas was inspired to do the storm trooper helmets after the chimneys there.
I love Barcelona and hope you have a fantastic trip.
We chose to do Casa Batllo, I really enjoyed it. It was closer to our hotel and we were kind of short on time that day (left it for the last day so same day as our cruise) We did it in the AM and went through the whole thing, in a couple hours. If I had more time I probably would have done both, but I'm into that sort of thing...DH not so much and he was fine with just doing the one.
It wasn't until my 3rd visit (which was recent) to Barcelona that I finally went inside to La Pedrera. The coolest part is on the roof like PP mentioned. When went when it was dark and about to storm, so it had a cool/eerie feeling to it.
We didn't go inside Casa Batllo, just enjoyed it from the outside. You will definitely have time to do both though if you want!
I would also recommend going inside Sagrada Familia. I know sometime churches start to all look the same, but really, it has such a unique feel to it.
Ok...what do you want to get out of the visit?
La Pedrera has a great museum with lots of explanation of how Gaudi worked. I think it does a great job of showing his thought process and how he designed. The floor that you get to walk shows you how he carried through his design esthetic in every detail of life. The roof is obviously cool.
Casa Batllo is amazingly beautiful. It is a wonderful execution of Gaudi's design principles, but there is less "museum-like" explanation. The audio guide is great. You get to explore a limited amount of the house (it is a private residence) but the attic rooms are serene and peaceful - be sure not to miss them.
If you can do it, see both. Casa Batllo has limited touring times, so you might miss it without prior planning. If you are intending to go on to Sagrada Familia, I strongly recommend La Pedrera, because you will appreciate the cathedral more with the explanation provided there.
I have a feeling we'll end up paying for all 3 tours b/c they all sound really cool.

As I put in my post, go through La Pedrera first. You will get more out of Sagrada Familia once you see the explanations at La Pedrera.
I agree with all of this. Definitely do both if you can. In terms of the rooftop, Casa Batllo's is smaller than Casa Mila but Batllo's is more colorful. If I could only go back to one, it would probably be Casa Mila as I really loved the chimneys on the rooftop. You can check out many photos from my visit to both places on my old travel blog: http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Spain/Catalonia/Barcelona/blog-391978.html
TravelingJen - your blog is amazing!! If you don't mind me asking how do you have time to travel so much?! I can't wait to read more of your posts when I have the time. What amazing experiences you are having!
Thank you! :-)
I used to be able to travel much more frequently than I do now as I was in a lower position at my current company and had more than ample back-up when I went on vacation. I only received 2 weeks of paid vacation but was fortunate enough to be able to take off up to another 4-6 weeks unpaid each year.
Unfortunately, my manager was laid off and then I was promoted into her position. Since I am now completely by myself in my department, I am not able to travel as much or for as lengthy periods of time. But, I still try to go on 3-4 trips a year.
I am getting remarried in November and hoping to take a 3 week honeymoon early next year to Thailand although I am quite nervous my company will say no due to the length of time. Fingers crossed! :-)
