Top Chef watchers

So.  Did last night's episode kill the series for you?  I'm holding out hope that this is like the Hosea season and it will rebound next year, but omg, that was painful.  Pee Wee Herman (is it the 90s again?). Pancakes (Top Diner Cook?). Bicycles (Top Bike Messenger?).  Borrowed kitchens (Top Home and Business Invader?).

Re: Top Chef watchers

  • I haven't watched last night epi yet, but I think they may have peaked with the Charlize Theron epi and fear it might be all downhill from here.

I'm not digging Emeril as a judge.

  • Yes, that episode was great.  There was a little creative challenge, then the chefs got to pretty much do whatever they wanted.  That always makes the best shows.

I was excited about this season.  I liked the twist at the start where they had to cook to get on the show.  The chefs' resumes are top notch.  All the challenges have been for shiit--too many cook chili or BBQ all night or catering type gigs.  It's been a waste.

Emeril is so weirdly stilted, which is surprising given that he's a tv personality.  I actually like Hugh Acheson when he's on (and his blog is hilarious).  I'll take anyone over Pee Wee.  Gah, I hated him when he was a thing. I do not want to revisit him 15 years later.

  • Fallin, did you see my p365 photo from last night?

Anyway, I didn't watch last night's ep either, but I think I rate this season second worst, behind the Hosea season.  At least there's no excruciating "showmance" on this season.  I, too, am sick of the "It's Texas, so y'all are gonna whip up a rootin' tootin' BBQ...FOR 75 STRAIGHT HOURS" challenges.

And I haven't watched a single online episode of Last Chance Kitchen, or whatever it's called, so I don't know what's going on there.

  • Ha! I just looked.  You will not be charmed after watching the episode, I promise.

I only know about LCK because I read Amalah's recaps.  Nyesha won all the LCKs, up until Beverly.  Beverly beat Nyesha and high ponytail Chris.  Beverly or last night's eliminated chef will return to the competition next week, putting us one step back from the end of this horrible season of ten-gallon hats and ribs.

  • My husband and I have been making the same complaint....too many times it's been about sheer endurance, and not about being creative and taking risks, or even just making plain old good food.  Perhaps that's why the Charlize epi was such a bright spot.  Feels like the only one that brought the creativity.

Couldn't have said it better.  This season is such a huge disappointment, and I've been a TC nerd since the first season.  It seems like everyone makes the same dishes for each challenge (Paul and Ed - something asian, sarah-something italian, lindsay-home cooking and grayson- anything midwestern).  I agree, someone was doing shrooms when they came up with this challenge.

The Charlize episode sparked a little bit of hope in my heart, they thought of some really creative dishes!  I can't believe Grayson lasted as long as she did.  She had the best personality, by far, but I think her cooking was pretty mediocre.  Bring Bev back!  She may be annoying, but she was a helluva cook.

  • I think they tend to take the location theme too far. Like, whoever creates challenges can't see beyond where they are shooting so Texas = all bbq, all the time.  I remember being frustrated by how many of the Chicago challenges were hot dogs, pizza, and tailgating.  Ok, but Chicago is also home to Alinea, Charlie Trotter, L2O, Avec, and Topolobampo.

  • Agreed.  I don't think they need to come up with new challenges every episode/season.  It seems like a perpetual "What can we do to make this even more zany and annoying for the viewers?"  Restaurant wars is held every season, every season it's the biggest episode.  Some challenges are really solid and should be done every season.  That way we aren't reduced to watching freaking peewee herman.  (Is that really the best celebrity they could come up with?  Pretty anticlimatic after Charlize Theron.)

Did you see Collichio?  He had the constipated face all through dinner, I think peewee was giving him major indigestion.

  • Paul Reubens should have let PeeWee die years and years ago.  Dude is too old for that role.  Creepy city.

I also loved the Charlize episode.  Last night....not so much.  All it did was make me hungry.  I don't really care who wins this season which says a lot.

  • I'm watching this week's ep now.  It's so stupid.  This is not The Amazing Race.

  • We just finished this epi. Effing awful.

  • I know I'm the minority, but I love PeeWee. I was disappointed when I missed his stage show in LA before it went to NY. I enjoyed this one, but I think I enjoyed it because I enjoy PeeWee. I agree about this season though. I think this is the first season where they've had even one "cook all night" challenge and they've had at least two.

But I have to argue. Hosea's season was dumb because Hosea won and that horrible girl had a crush on him, but it brought us Carla.  Season 2 was the worst season. Hands down. Everyone on that season was terrible except for Hot Diabetic Sam, who we haven't seen since.
