Just returned from the ENT
So Emmett failed his hearing tests and pretty much heard nothing on his left side when they were testing him. Before the doc even looked in his ears, she said that based on his hearing test alone, she'd recommend tubes.
I cried. I mean, I know it's because there's fluid in his ears but when a doctor tells you "Your kid failed the test and has mild hearing loss" I just lost it.
His surgery is scheduled for Monday morning at 7:30 so please send the Charmin our way.

Re: Just returned from the ENT
Good luck on the surgery. I am sorry he failed the test.
But as a speech pathologist, I can tell you that taking care of this early is so great and that it's just a conductive loss due to the fluid and once the tubes are in there is not going to be an issue since the fluid will be gone.
Thank you. I was hoping you'd be a voice of reason for me and I was actually going to message you. She said his left ear is filled with the thicker fluid (he had another ear infection last week) and his right has some fluid but not as much. I am hoping that the loss is temporary (and due to the fluid) and that it'll get better once the tubes are in place.

Charmin sent.
I know how scary it is to get news like that, but it's early. Vibezzzz to a speedy recovery for the little guy!
Conductive losses due to fluid are temporary and very very common.
When you are looking at speech production, it can certainly have an affect if it is a recurring issue over time, but there are a lot of strategies for remediation if necessary. Helping him hear by having the tubes placed is absolutely the best thing he can do.
And Dagger passed his test, but his ears were clear at that time. it is really just the luck of the draw on whether or not the fluid is in there at the time of the test.
And he has no problems or delays with speech, although, he has definitely had a huge huge huge language burst after getting tubes. I do think some of it is just that he is at that age, but I suspect you are going to see a lot more speech development for Emmett now.

Thanks everyone, it really means a lot and I appreciate the validation that I wasn't a crazy mom for crying. I mean, I held it together with the doc but got in the car and lost it.

Good luck to Emmett! DD had this done 1.5 years ago and it was (1) the most I've cried in public since elem. school and (2) the best thing we've ever done for her.
It's such a quick procedure, he'll be out in no time and back in your arms.
