QOTD: Thursday

This is sort of a mix since I"m not thinking much today  :)

1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?

2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?

3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).

4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).

Re: QOTD: Thursday

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?  I could probably do without the oven for a year - I do a lot of stove top cooking.  I mean, I'd miss some baked/roasted meals, but I cook those less often.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?  Chinese delivery :P  There's not one thing I cook all the time, but we certainly get Chinese almost weekly.

    3.  If you  had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).  I have eaten Raisin Bran  nearly every day for the last 15 yrs, with week long breaks here and there.  I could do that easily every day.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).  Yay, Toledo?  I'd probably take someone to the art museum, which is decent for how small Toledo is, and hit up the glass building (part of the museum, but across the street) where you can watch glass blowers do their thing.  After that...that's hard (Toledo is pretty dull).  Maybe a Mud Hens (AAA baseball) game, since I've never been in their new (in the last 10 yrs) stadium?

  • Dude, this is a lot of questions to think about.

    1. Toaster.

    2. Crockpot salsa chicken (but with really good salsa, like with roasted tomatoes, tomatillos, etc.). Throw in a can of drained black beans when you get home and dinner is done in a snap. That or pantry pasta with goat cheese. Or potstickers and sauteed broccoli. We eat dinner at home a lot so we have a big rotation.

    3. Just once a day? I think I could eat just about anything once a day. Good cheese or mashed potatoes.

    4. There are a million in DC (where I was born), obviously, but I can't think of any for the area where I grew up (outer SS).

  • 1. If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?  I honestly could probably live without a stove, as long as I had access to a grill.  When we lose power I am still able to cook because our grill has a burner - so i can boil water, and then grill stuff.  On a smaller scale I might be able to live without a microwave.  It would be tough, but doable.

    2. What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly? Some sort of pasta with tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and herbs.  I usually rotate chicken or shrimp.

    3. If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be? (this doesn't have to be for every meal).  Eggs.  I love eggs.

    4. If you were chosen to give a tour of your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).  Geneva, NY.  We would have lunch at Cam's (NY pizza - the best i've had outside of NYC) and then we would probably go on a wine tour around Seneca Lake (it's more than 1 place, but it'll kill some time - there's not much to do in my hometown). If we have time, we'd probably stop at Wegmans too, because why not?

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be? does a microwave count? i've lived without a full size oven. that kind of blows.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly? pasta amatriciana (i usually make a lot and freeze the extra for a really easy dinner)

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal). i *could* eat ice cream or gelato every day

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it). not sure they really qualify as "must see" but my hometown has the peak house and rocky woods

  • 1.  I guess I have to go with the dishwasher, but it would really suck. I definitely can't give up the fridge or stove, and giving up the oven would make it nearly impossible to cook pizza or do any baking. I can't think of any other major appliances.

    2. Simple pasta or ravioli with red sauce and salad. That's my default when I don't have anything else planned.

    3. Cheese or chocolate. I'll take both. That was easy.

    4. I've lived in the DC area longer than anywhere else, but I'll go with my old home town of Jacksonville, FL. I would probably take a visitor to the beach and to the downtown riverwalk area (which isn't spectacular, but it is pretty).

  • 1) Food processor? I don't  know, I use the oven, stove, and fridge all the time so that doesn't leave a lot of options. I guess I could live without the microwave but then everything would take forever and I would be cranky.

    2) Whole wheat pasta with turkey sausage, veggies, marinara.

    3) Like QueSrah, I've eaten the same cereal (Fiber One Raisin Bran Crunch) for years and will likely continue to. I mix it up every once in a while but I really like it.

    4) My current hometown of Takoma Park? The farmer's market and maybe some of the pretty older houses, Sligo Creek, or the cheesecake place (we go there way too often . . .).

  • his is sort of a mix since I"m not thinking much today  :)

    1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?

Microwave. Growing up, we never had one. I think maybe we moved into a condo that had one in my junior or senior year of high school. I hardly ever us ours, except to reheat food, which can easily be done on the stove

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?

Grilled cheese and soup (only in cooler weather) and breakfast (year round)

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).

Eggs - so many different ways to prepare them

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).

Winston-Salem, NC. I'd take people to Reynolda House, the former home of RJ Reynolds, founder of RJR tobacco, which is now an art museum, and to Old Salem, the restored Moravian village that is one of the first settlements of the town. We would also drive by the former RJR headquarters, which was the prototype for the Empire State Building.

  • 1. I guess dishwasher...yuck though. Our microwave died yesterday right before dinner and we missed it instantly

    2. We are on a pretty strict, routine diet, so we eat the same meals all.the.time. One favorite is salmon.

    3. See number #2...we've been on this diet since the end of May, and I would guess nearly every single day we eat sauteed spinach with dinner, and sometimes with lunch too. I would rather be eating chocolate or ice cream.

    4. My hometown is Manassas, Va...I guess I'd make someone go to one of the battlefields, and Old Town is pretty cute.

  • 1. The microwave.  Once I learned my kids liked their veggies frozen better, I only use it to reheat leftovers, which I can do on the stovetop or in the oven.  The extra dishes would suck, but the other major ones I just can't live without.

    2. We make homemade pizza every Friday.  Every week I try to make a different legume dish as one of our proteins.  Once or twice a month we have breakfast for dinner and once a month we have a Costco chicken.  Everything is else is much more varied.

    3.   PB&J or oatmeal.  I pretty much eat both as often as I can.

    4. I grew up in a small town in North Jersey on the Hudson just north of Manhattan.  I routinely take guests to the Revolutionary war battlefield in my hometown and the best chocolate shop I've ever been to - Conrads (technically the next town over, but it's less than 2 miles away).  For the shopping minded, I might make the 10 minute drive to Paramus, the largest shopping mecca in the US, as long as it wasn't Sunday, we have crazy strict blue laws.

    YesYes Color me jealous!

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?  Definitely the oven.  I only use it once or twice a week now, and could use my electric roaster if I had to make a turkey or something.  Bonus for my thighs that I wouldn't be able to make cakes, cookies or brownies.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?  I make a couple of different versions of crockpot chili almost every week, especially when DH is around but on a wacky work schedule, so he can have a filling meal whenever he is looking for something to eat.  When I am home alone for the week, I make a giant pot of (turkey) Sausage, bean & escarole soup and eat it all week long.  It is my favorite favorite meal lately, especially in the winter.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).  Olives?  Salad?  (If someone else was making it for me)... a giant steak if it would magically not impact on my ass and my health?

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).  I grew up in Madison, CT... one definite must see would be the beach, where I spend every minute of my time when I am home and it is nice, or bundled up in a sweatshirt when it isn't.... other than that, we don't really have any big "claim to fame"... maybe Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale restaurant?  I never really went there growing up, but DH LOVES it, so we go there a lot when we are home... and people always ask about it when I say I am from there.

Yes! Capital City Cheesecake! They make mini cheesecakes that are SO GOOD, and they are actually doing a Living Social deal right now. We also love their muffins/pastries and sandwiches. Like I said, we go there too much.

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?  Dishwasher.  I could wash dishes by hand if need be, but it would be pretty hard to get by without a fridge or stove.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?  It's more likely monthly, but zucchini parm or cheese enchiladas are our "go-to" meals.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).  Probably milk, since I usually have a glass of it most days anyway.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).  Oh good lord... I technically grew up outside of Millsboro, DE; there are no must-see places.  I would probably take people to the Punkin Chunkin festival (I've never actually been, but it's our claim to fame) and boating on the bay.

This was my parents growing up.  No complaints here.

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be? Dishwasher. It would suck, but I could get by since it's just the two of us. If we had a larger family, my answer may be different.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly? Plain ol' pasta (with sauce or olive oil and herbs) and salad.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal). Pasta for sure. I sometimes wonder if I was really born in Italy.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).  Pittsburgh, PA- We'd go to the Warhol museum and up to Mt. Washington via the incline for a gorgeous view of the city.

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be? Probably the microwave.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly? Red beans and rice with turkey sausage, salad.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal). Greek yogurt.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it). Greensboro, NC. We'd go to the site of the Woolworth lunch counter sit-ins (now a civil rights musuem) and then for a yummy lunch at Steamy's barbeque.

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?

Dishwasher because DH does the dishes.  ;-)

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?

Something with TJ's flavored chicken sausages.  In a pasta dish, or with rice and beans, or on risotto, all depending on the flavor.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).

BACON.  And I'd have no problem if it was at every meal.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).

Corning NY, so the glass museum.  Then Wegmans if the tourees aren't familiar with them.

  • 1. Is the microwave a major appliance?? I would give up that.

    2. I make baked chicken parm a few times a month. it is easy and everyone like its.

    3. I think I already eat a banana everyday.

    4. Annapolis- I would take you on a harbor cruise and to Paca Garden and House

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be?

definitely the dish washer since DH does the dishes! :P

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly?

i really don't have one. we rarely eat the same meal more than once every few weeks. meals that DH specifically requests are enchiladas and tofu in peanut butter sauce

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal).

Mila! it's so full of nutrients and fiber and protein...i wouldn't really need anything else. i eat this every day anyway, so this is kind of a cheat answer.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it).

Alexandria - must see Old Town, must see the city from the top of the Masonic Temple

  • 1.  If you had to give up 1 kitchen appliance (major appliance not like a toster) for 1 year what would it be? The dishwasher, I guess, since DH is supposed to do the dishes anyway, but I'd be worried that without a dishwasher he would let them pile up even more than he already does.  Or microwave, we really don't use it much anyway.

    2.  What is your "go to meal" - something that prepare almost weekly? Something with lentils-we love them and they are CHEAP.

    3.  If you had to eat 1 food everyday for 1 year what would it be?  (this doesn't have to be for every meal). Cheese.  I practically eat it every day anyway.

    4.  If you were chosen to give a tour of  your hometown - what are 2 must see places (and in what city is it). Well, I'm from the middle of nowhere in WNY, but the one place near my hometown that is a must-see is Letchworth State Park.  We'd also do some hiking on the Finger Lakes trail, which is actually super close to my parents' house.
