First World Problem

So, Sunday, we are moving into a condo for a month.

That condo has no DVR. I only get to watch my shows on DVR anymore.

We are going to keep ours plugged in at home, but we are giving away our TV since we just bought new ones, but those will not be set up until the end of the project.

This means I am going to miss a month of shows.

Woah is me.

Re: First World Problem

  • You can probably catch them online or on ondemand if you have comcast.

  • You can watch a lot of stuff online now.  Could you maybe try that?

  • Yeah, I am hoping I can watch online but some shows were weird about that I though?. We have Uverse which has on demand, but I am not sure what type of cable they have at the condo. All I know is it is the basic package.

Mr. Winged suggested just unplugging the DVR since we wouldn't be there. We almost divorced.

  • Thoughts and prayers.
  • Why can't you bring your DVR with you?

I don't know that it's compatible with the condo. I don't know what they have.

But can you even do that? Does it work plugged into another TV?

  • Is your DVR your cable box?

Will you have internet in the condo?  Buy a $100 Tivo.

  • It should unless it's part of your cable box.

  • Oh yeah, I should have mentioned it is part of our cable box.

I would love to buy a tivo. But i am not sure I can justify it in the middle of what is already a very expensive project.

Eh, what's another hundred or so?

Does the condo have cable?  Are you sure it doesn't have a DVR? Could you upgrade to DVR for the month?

ETA: Maybe my parents just have a crappy cable DVR but I SOOOOOOOOO prefer Tivo.

  • I've been happy with our DVR.

The condo has cable, just a basic package, but I am not sure what brand it is. I could call and ask, but I will find out Sunday anyway.

I guess I could ask about upgrading. They have been very accomodating.

Yes you can.  I may be poor, but the Tivo has a very important place in my budget.

  • I only have TiVo, so I don't know how it works with a DVR from the cable company.  But I would assume you could still move it.  I know nothing about these things, but I can't think of a reason that would make the DVR house-specific.

You could always just buy a used TiVo.

  •  Depending on what the cable provider is, you can buy a TiVo and connect it through the cable.  For mine, we had to get a cable card through Comcast a few months ago in order for ours to work (we have basic cable through the HOA).  TiVo is the best invention ever and we've had one since I was probably 13 or so.  I'm on the TiVo snob couch.

I wonder if your uverse is plugged in but you don't have a TV if it will work/record things.

  • Is there not a way to transfer DVR'ed programs to an external harddrive so you can watch them in the new place?  Our fios has room for extra memory...
  • I'm a tech moron so I'm no help.  I mostly came in here to whine about how much I miss having u-verse.  4 shows at once was a thing of beauty.  Now I'm forced to choose only 2.  Whoa is me, y'all.  WHOA IS ME!
  • No, you can't transfer things from your UVerse DVR to anything else.  I've tried and scoured the web and tried some more, no dice.  You also definitely can't just take it to another house/condo.  You can't even move which jack the effing gateway box is plugged into in your house and expect it to reliably work.  That cost me $75 in a technician visit and is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. It should still record with no TV though.

The only bright side is that Uverse lets you have access to lots of shows on-demand from your phone if you use their app Winger.
