1st Birthday Party Menu Ideas Needed

Hey Ladies,

I know I haven't been around much these past few months but I'd like to pick your brains.  Alex's 1st birthday is at the end of this month and we're having a party for family and a couple close friends of ours.

Theme:  Dinosaurs! (Alex loves the book "How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?")

# of Guests: 20 (all adults minus one other one yr. old)

Begins at 1:30 p.m. so snacks and appetizers, no real meal and of course cake and ice cream.  I'm also making dino shaped sugar cookies as favors.

SO I need ideas for dino themed snacks/appetizers.  I want to do two or three little finger food type things.  This is where I need your help.  Any suggestions?! Even just suggestions of non-dino themed things would be helpful.  The easier the better!  I have been googling on and off for a few days and haven't found anything that I like.   Thanks in advance!

P.S.  I think I'm going to be one of those moms that cries on his 1st birthday - where the heck did the last year of our lives go?!

  • You said the easier the better, so...they sell dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets at the grocery store! I get these for my husband, because he's pretty much just like a 1 year old. :)

LOL really?! I will have to check for these because that would be simple and they would get eaten!  I just know I may not have a lot of time to get things prepped and we're not going for super fancy - just good food and a good time.

  • What about cutesy names for dip?  You could do buffalo chicken dip and call it "lava dip" or a spinach artichoke dip could be "leafy lunch dip"...

You can really do whatever the people in your circle like- for us that's chili cheese dip, buffalo chicken balls, pulled pork sliders (really easy in the crock pot), and some sort of cheese stick (I buy these frozen bc the homemade ones aren't as good according to my husband)

    White Knot
Stand up for something you believe in. White Knot
  • What if you made some finger sandwiches and cut them into dinosaur shapes with a cookie cutter?

    Or even better, with this?

This.  Sometimes it's easier to serve what you want, then come up with a cutesy name that fits the theme. Even something like pulled pork sliders could be Carnivore Chow or BBQ Brontosaurus or something.

I totally ditto something in the crock pot - salsa chicken, pulled pork, hawaiian chicken.  Makes for great sliders and an easy heavier finger food.

  • I was also going to suggest the dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets.

    Ideas for dinosaur themed food:

    Brontosaurus Ribs

    Pterodactyl Deviled Eggs

T-Rex Carnivore Bites (meatballs, cocktail franks, anything meaty)

    Triceratops tri-colored pasta salad

An herbivore veggie tray and a carnivore meat/cheese or deli meat tray

  • Thanks ladies, this is great!  I've been so burnt out lately that my creative side has gone into hibernation.  These are all awesome suggestions.  I always forget about my poor crock pot - I need to break that out and start trying some recipes that have been collecting dust.
  • In the crockpot, you could do meatballs or little smokies in the grape jelly and chili sauce recipe that we posted about a few days ago. That's super easy and yummy. Some carnivorous name would be appropriate, but I can't think of anything at the moment.

You could do a veggie tray, but with only broccoli and stand them up like trees. You could serve it with Mary's spinach dip idea.

I also love the idea of deviled eggs and the dino sandwiches.
