What is in your carry-on?

What is in your carry-on for long flights?  We will arrive and tour a little bit before going to the hotel. Would like to not look like a complete zombie like wreck.

Any links or previous posts about carry-on packing would be great!

Re: What is in your carry-on?

  • I travel with ONLY carry on, so everything is in there LOL! I use packing cubes which makes it all very organized and compact. I also roll most of my clothes for optimal space usage.
  • Usually more crap than I end up using. A book, maybe a magazine, sudoku book + pen, snacks, tea bags, travel pillow for long flight. I also usually carry on my DSLR b/c I don't trust it in checked baggage.
  • I only travel with a carry on (99% of the time) so everything is in there. But I make sure that a change of clothes, brush, makeup, toothpaste, lotion, contact stuff and deoderant is close to the top so I can change and clean up when we land.
  • toiletries/makeup, book, travel book/info, gum/few snacks, purell, handiwipes, clorox wipes (travel size of course), travel tissue, travel pillow and wrap if international.  All fits in a handy tote.  I pack light for my carryon.

  • Everything. But I try to keep my contact case and solution, glasses, and a pen handy. If you're worried about sleeping, I find an eye mask and ear plugs really help me, and I'm a light sleeper. And maybe throw a travel size pouch of baby wipes in your carry-on to freshen up.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • My laptop if I bring it with me, two books or my Kindle, depending on what I'm reading, my iPod, headphones, my toilet kit (hairbrush, toothpaste, toothbrush, rubber bands for ponytails, moisturizer, deodorant, solid perfume and shampoo, baby powder, and lip balm), two extra pair of underwear, my travel purse, my wallet (tickets, cash, credit cards, id, etc.), my camera bag with extra batteries and memory cards, cell phone, my day-runner, and various chargers.

There is plenty of room for souvenirs on the way home.

  • My carry-on contains:

    passport
    frequent flyer cards
    wallet
    keys
    iPad
paperback novel (for the no-electronics taxi/takeoff/landing times)
    inflatable footrest
    TravelRest pillow
    any jewelry I'm carrying
    tissues
    pen
    earplugs
    eyemask
    nail file
    comb
    hair elastic
    breath spray
    facial wipes
    panty liners
    Advil & Pepto Bismol
    cell phone
    camera
    chargers & plug adapters

That's pretty much it. Unless I'm traveling with my work laptop, in which case I have all the peripheral bits for that as well. My carry-on is a 12"x6" tote-bag-style purse that I slip under the seat in front of me. That seems to be enough, even on back-to-back 8-hour flights. I hate big carry-ons.

    ETA - I forgot:
noise-isolating earphones (which are actually stored permanently in my iPad cover)
    airplane headphone adapter
emergency-only toothbrush (in case I get stuck sleeping in an airport or something; it's one of those little one-use things from a hotel or a business class amenity kit, and I never even bother putting the teeny-tiny toothpaste in my liquids bag.)

I don't actually work off a list, because (aside from stuff like my keys, wallet, iPad, camera, etc), the rest stays packed at all times. I found that it was too easy to forget things, so I started with my own version of the amenity kit, which had a hair band, tissues, pen, headphone adapter, etc. There were things like the travel pillow that didn't fit in my tiny zip pouch, so eventually I just picked a bag specifically to be my "personal item" and it remains packed at all times. (Lately it's also been staying right by the door with my passport still inside - which is admittedly a bit extreme. It's not like I'm a spy. ...or am I? Wink )

  • I am not in the carry-on-only camp (unless it's a very quick weekend trip).  I almost always check a bag...so usually for the two of us for 1 week + trips, we check a regular sized rolling duffel and carry-on the mini rolling duffel.  In the carry-on, I pack enough stuff for each of us for at least one day/one night (sometimes two) in case our luggage is lost or delayed, plus guidebooks, maps, travel information, and some snacks.  I often end up putting other things in there in the course of packing to lighten the load on my larger bag.  I also have a messenger bag with my passport, money, paperback, ipod, hand sanitizer, make-up remover pads, and gum.  My husband carries the camera case as his personal item.
  • I follow the PackingLight method, so in my overhead bin is enough clothing to last me for 10 days, along with my shoes, makeup, and cameras.

In my purse is my kindle & charger, empty water bottle (I detest the stupid cups on flights), phone, eye drops, hairbrush, lip gloss (moved from 3-1-1 bag after security) and headphones.
  • Depends on the trip. When I used to work for an airline, we only ever did carry-on because we flew standby.

Now that we don't, it still varies. Generally it's toiletries, 1-2 pairs of underwear/socks, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, the iPad/book/magazines, headphones.

I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.

This is a great list; I'm going to use this.  In addition; if I'm flying anywhere for an overnight trip; I'll put a change of underwear, toothbrush, minitooth paste and mini deoderant

to not look like a zombie freshen up make up before you get off the plane, brush your teeth, fix your hair.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I'm finally down to being carry-on only for my trips (hooray!) but in my personal item that I stow at my feet I have enough to carry me for a day or so if for some reason I was forced to check my small suitcase.

    - Phone / Kindle / Camera + chargers, batteries/battery charger, headphones
    - Snacks (Luna bars, wintergreen lifesavers, gum, tic-tacs, gummy bears, jerky)
    - Toiletries (311 baggie - face wash, shampoo/conditioner, acne cream, sunscreen/lotion, chapstick, eye drops) + hair brush and extra hair ties and clips, deodorant, toothbrush/toothpaste
    - Pen, magazine, puzzle book, notepad
    - Purse - money / CC / ID / Passport / tickets / itinerary
    - USB with + emergency contact info for me + travel partner, plus other eVersions of paper things I might be traveling with
    - Ziplock baggie with at least one pair of clean underwear, socks, and a camisole.  This is my "emergency" baggie, for if I get stuck somewhere and "need" something clean that hasn't been hand washed in a sink or been washed in unfamiliar detergent.

Also, a bathing suit if we're going somewhere warm.

  • bathing suit is a great suggestion so you can head straight to the pool of your resort while waiting for the room or for your bags to arrive.

and I love the rec. to bring a paperback for when you have to power down your electronic reader.
