RailEurope/TGV help needed

Is there a place where I can get decent (detailed) instructions on how this works?  I am so confused and the more I read, the more confused I become.

In case anyone KNOWS...I am planning to take the TGV/high speed train from Paris to Avignon, and then alternate transportation (what?) to my final destination.  I plan to return to Paris the same way, in reverse.  While I am there, I would like to use train or bus to travel to other places such as Arles, Les Baux, Roussillon, etc.

I am getting so frustrated, I am reconsidering renting a car instead of the public trans for local sightseeing, and just get the TGV for to and from Paris. (Did that make sense?)

Re: RailEurope/TGV help needed

  • I'm not entirely sure if you're asking for tips on how to buy from the TGV website or how to search for certain connections/destinations- I hope this doesn't just confuse you more.  I can tell you that when I was looking into certain areas of Normandy some said it would just be easier to rent a car- however, we were able to get a train from Paris to Bayeux and get a driver from there.

TripAdvisor has lots of TGV posts if you haven't already checked there.  I used this one for a step-by-step how-to buy guide:

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187147-i14-k587932-MorganB_s_French_SNCF_Train_Rail_Booking_Guide_version_2-Paris_Ile_de_France.html

I got my train tix from TGV (and Bahn for Germany) for about HALF of what RailEurope would have charged.  I also priced out passes vs. buying point-to-point tix and again, the pass prices were crazy compared to PTP from TGV and Bahn.

  • I don't know how helpful this will be, but when we were in France we flew into Paris, then rented a car and drove to Normandy.  We considered taking a train, but as far as we could tell renting a car would be faster and about the same price - maybe cheaper.  When we left Paris we went to Venice and ended up flying because it was cheaper and much simpler than taking the train.

If you do rent a car I strongly recommend using a GPS - I don't know how we would have managed with out ours.  Also, if possible - do not drive in Paris!  It is nearly impossible to find parking and driving there is not the easiest.

We also found the front desk staff at every hotel we stayed at while in France and Italy to be extremely helpful.  If you have questions while you're there, ask!

I have NO intention of driving in Paris!  I may be crazy (drove in Ireland) but not *that* crazy!  Also, we re renting a house in Provence so I don't know how much help we can rely on in that town.  I really want to have all of this pinned down before we leave, KWIM?

Valentine, I am going to check out trip advisor now!  Thanks for the rec!
