Beach Sand Replenishment Project - Waikiki Beach?
Are there any locals, or very recent visitors, that can fill me in on the beach sand replenishment project going on with Waikiki Beach? I can only find very vague details online, such as east Kuhio is closed through March. (Which is very disappointing since we have two small children and were very much looking forward to swimming in that protected area.) We're staying at the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider mid to late February and I'd like to prepare myself in advance for how big of an eye sore this will be, or if the beach will be closed in front of our hotels.
Re: Beach Sand Replenishment Project - Waikiki Beach?
I'm a local and haven't heard of any problems with people losing beach space. I haven't been down to the Waikiki Beach in a couple months though. But people usually make a big fuss about stuff like that and I haven't heard any uproar at all. I don't think it should be a problem for you!
I just called a friend who lives down there--she said it shouldn't affect your stay at all. They have part of the beach closed off but it's more down by the zoo area which would be farther east of the Royal Hawaiian. There will be plenty of sun and sand for you and your family!
I walk Waikiki about 2 times a week with the kids.
The section of Kuhio Beach with the retaining wall "Slippery Wall" is the area that will be blocked off until March because that is where they are pumping the sand into as the loading area.
That is the area where families go because of the calm waters because of the wall that I'm pretty sure you are referring too...which is a bummer.
There will still be plenty of beach left to relax on.
They are being careful to only work on small sections at a time. I'm sure there will always be an area in front of both hotels available while you are here.
I wouldn't let it get to you.
We go to Kaimana Beach, a local, family beach on the left side of the Aquarium & Natatorium that is calm and has tons of kids. Its about a 10 minute walk from the Moana.
