Please tell me all about Discovery Cove
My daughter will be six in July...she's been asking to go swimming with the dolphins for her next birthday. We will be in Disney over the summer and were thinking about taking her to Discovery Cove while we are there. Can you tell me everything you know about it? I have a daughter who will be 3 also. Will she be able to do anything there? I know she wont' be able to swim with the Dolphins since it says 6 and older. Please give me all your info. Thanks.
Re: Please tell me all about Discovery Cove
I usually lurk, but thought I'd reply since we've been here with our 10 year old son. We all loved it. The day is all-inclusive, so you get lunch included, and unlimited drinks (non-alcohol) and snacks. The dolphins are amazing. You may be grouped with one other family, but you all are up close and get a turn with the dolphin pulling you through the water. The water is freezing, by the way, so be ready for that.
After the dolphin interaction, we snorkeled in the main area. There are tons of fish, sting rays, and mantas. Also, if you dive down there's a glass partition off in one area where there are sharks on the other side of the glass. So cool! There's also a separate 'pool' about waist deep that is just full of sting rays swimming around you while you stand there and you can pet them as they come by.
Another area is the Aviary. Birds come and land right on your hand and you can pet them and feed them. They're beautiful. There was a really small fawn when we were there too.
For your 3 year old, there's a separate area that's for swimming only. The water is warmer too. I'm not sure there's much else for her to do though.
FYI, we prepped our son for what he'd be swimming with and he was so excited, but he still completely freaked out once we actually were going to swim with all these things. I was a little surprised. He was dead-set on not going in at all, and he's not a fearful person. Once he saw us doing it for a while he got his feet wet and eventually came in and had a blast.
That got long....but all that said, you should definitely go. We'll always remember that experience (you can also purchase a DVD of all your pics. They have photographers throughout). Also, bring underwater disposable cameras. We got some awesome pictures out of those. Let me know if you have any other questions!
