This shouldn't be so hard...

I'm in the process of updating my resume, possibly reworking it, to find a job. I've come to a standstill because I really don't know how to indicate what I've done for the last 9 months (when I last had a "real job").

I got in touch with the career development center at the university because they offer resume help to alumni for free. Turns out they have a new system, where you create an account with it, it has to be approved (no idea how long that's supposed to take), then you submit your resume and get feedback on it.

Seems simple enough, but I already have a pretty great resume, and I just had a couple quick questions. The woman I worked with while I was in school was fast and really good.

I last worked in May. Since then, I followed my H for his job, we decided I would be a SAHW. I got bored, so I started volunteering for Homeward Pet (did that Sept - Dec), started working with a trainer and a counselor to focus on my health and work through my fear of driving (since the accident). I'm also helping my trainer with the marketing, re-branding and launch of her business.

Any suggestions?

Re: This shouldn't be so hard...

  • i put volunteer work on my resume, so i would add the work you did with homeward, and if it's volunteer or if it's paid, i would still put your help to the trainer listed....list the company name as your "employer" and just treat it like a "real" job.

  • FWIW, I was unemployed for 10 months and I just had my last job listed. In this economy it's very common that people have gaps of employment. I just explained in my interviews that I left my last job due to relocating and that I had spent time volunteering.

Good luck on your job search!

That actually makes me feel a ton better. I wasn't too worried about it because I've held great positions previously, but my H is making me freak out about it.
