has anyone paid to have their house cleaned upon moving out?

The housing that we live in is pretty nice and relatively new. Its two story, 3br 2.5ba with a dining room and laundry room. Its big to say the least. There is no way I'm going to have the time or energy to clean this by myself or even with a few friends helping. I'm wondering what the cost to have people come and clean it, has anyone gone that route before and know roughly what it would cost?

The housing office is ridiculously strict when it comes to checking out of the house, so if I didn't have to stress over that, it would be a huge weight lifted off.

I'm open to any other ideas and suggestions as well.

Re: has anyone paid to have their house cleaned upon moving out?

  • Our townhouse we just moved out of offered a cleaning service for $140 through a company they use.  I didn't want to bother cleaning anything so I just vacuumed and had them clean.  It was definitely well worth it to me.

At our townhouse before that I got a pricelist from the office for what they charge for each item if it isn't clean enough.  When I saw that we would only be charged $25 if the oven was dirty I said eff that and left it as is.

Can you check Groupon and living social for services in your area?  I know I see cleaning services all the time on there.  I would just be skeptical about having them come after you leave.  I would try and schedule them for the day after the truck is loaded and then leave after that.

  • The one time we were thinking of doing this, we approached the housing folks (it was privatized, so that might make a difference) and asked them if they could recommend someone.  They told us to tack $150 fee onto the move-out, and we'd be all square - that's what it cost to pay their folks to do a full clean-out on a house.

Then they screwed up royally during our move-out, so they never charged us for it.

  • Do they have a company rec?

  • I'm at a small base where there is only one recommended company.  They charge $200, so a lot of people around here get a bunch of girls together and do cleaning parties.  It's quicker and actually fun.

  • The last place we moved out of gave us a special cleaning deal. I think it was ~$125 and it might have included carpet cleaning. I pounced and was definitely very happy to be able to simply take off after the movers took our stuff rather than having to stay back and clean the apartment.

Given a similar opportunity I would do the same thing again. Next time especially. I'm going to have enough other things to worry about in the middle of the move without having to stop and clean the apartment.

That's a good idea. I'll check with housing for who they recommend (or if they will just charge a cleaning fee) and keep my eye out for a groupon or something over next few months! I will definitely still be here when they do the cleaning. I'm willing to spend a couple hundred dollars this time. It's worth my sanity.

Talk to housing. They'll have a list of "approved" house cleaners for move out inspections. They can point you in the right direction.

This. And they tend to run cheaper too. We were referred to a service who charged 80 dollars per house. (Mind you, we lived in a duplex)

  • It's going to be like $500 if we pay their company to clean for us, more or less depending on the yen rate and the quote.  O_O

  • I dont know if we'll be living on base again (which is sad panda actually) But I will totally do this next time we move out of base housing.

during out last move, we had a "cleaning party" with a bunch of friends and my brother and his Fi. Yeah, we got everything done and had a fairly good time doing it, but I think I'll still pay the money next time. All my nice dish towels are now dirty gray because someone decided to clean with them. I should have packed those first! lol

  • Not while in military housing, but our last place I found someone on CL and did. It was $150 for a 4/3/2 and WELL worth the money. Not having to worrying about cleaning was AWESOME.

  • I've done this twice, once in military housing and once after selling my off-base house.   Both times it was worth every penny.

After you pack out, and all of your cleaning supplies are gone, the last thing you want to do is scrub toilets, clean your oven, wipe out the fridge, rinse out the garbage can and recycle bins, etc, ESPECIALLY if you have kids or pets.   Don't forget that housing will want your lawn to be perfect when you move out as well (hedges trimmed, lawn mowed and edged, leaves raked, no weeds), and some cleaning companies will do your lawn work also.

If you can afford a few hundred dollars, then I would definitely recommend hiring someone.  It just reduces the overall stress level.

If you can't afford it, then definitely make sure you get some help :-)
