Prescription meds on flight to Oz?
My MIL insists that I need to have a prescription with me for any meds I'll take to Australia, is this true? How does that work? I obviously don't have the prescription for the meds anymore as I gave it to the chemist to get the meds to start with...
Has she watched too many "Border Control" type shows or is this true?
Re: Prescription meds on flight to Oz?
It depends on the medication you are on. If it's like, one off perscription eye drops or something you should be fine. However, if you're like me and currently on so many meds that it's easy to confuse you with a common mexican drug mule you may want to bring the perscriptions along with you - just to avoid a cavity search.
Have you tried paging Knitty? She knows everything about Australia, air travel and possibly also cavity searches / searching. I'm sure she could help.
Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!

My doctor (here in OZ) always gives me a letter that states my conditions and the medications that I currently take. This is pretty standard for everywhere I have travelled. The only countries that have ever asked to see it are Thailand and Egypt and I have to put all my liquid medication in the clear platic baggies for inspection in every country (which is a PIA).
It is important to make sure that you are able to bring the medications that you are on into the country as well. Some medications freely available in the States are not available here or even banned in OZ.
Also the doctors note is great if you so happen to get taken to hospital- they know exactly what you are on and how much.
I don't carry the actual prescription with me, just make sure the prescription label on the bottle is still legible.
I brought 6 months worth of allergy pills (3x a day for 6 months) that are NOT available in OZ. They never even questioned it. Heck, Egypt never even questioned any of my meds.

So...a few months worth of birth control pills will or will not get me 25 to life?
Probably not. But if you're in for a good time you could bring a couple of large baggies full of unlabeled white tic tacs hidden in your shoes and call them "crack jacks" with you on your next flight and let us know how it went.
(youtube or it didn't happen!)

That isn't too far out there. The lady that went through Customs ahead of me had (apparently undeclared) M&Ms in her coat pocket. O.M.G. The way they tore through her bags searching for more contraband, I am surprised a strip search didn't happen too.
Yeah, that's the problem: that's just not how meds are packaged here - there's no mention of the doc/prescription on them.
I guess it shouldn't be a problem if I have just one sheet of diuretics, right? It's really just for the flights and in case my blood pressure plays up...
Hope I don't get in trouble for all the belgian chocs I plan on bringing... last count we're at four 1kg boxes... I'll earn my stay without having to do the dishes
I would pack them in an easily accessible place so you can show them if they want to see them, and for heavens sake make sure you declare them.
If there is no doctor name/Rx number or anything on the actual package, I would get a letter from the doctor. It can't hurt.
Will do (to both!)
If you have the prescription handy, it's good to bring. I've brought them in containers labeled w/ the script when I have it, but have been fine w/ meds when I didn't.
Customs did smash a thumb or forefinger through each of my smartie filled easter eggs once
I was bringing them back to the US for little cousins and they were the only thing defiled in my bag. I guess they were checking there wasn't anything else smuggled in the chocolate (hollow egg filled w/ m&m-like candies, so they shake like a rattle).
and lol tofu.
I declared the Junior Mints in my carry-on on one visit and was nearly strip searched.
If I know I'm going to be traveling with meds (like heparin shots to prevent another thrombosis), then I make sure the pharmacist gives me a copy of the prescription, which I then pack along with the medication.
I used to bring back unlabeled baking soda in a plastic bag sometimes and was always paranoid they would think it was coke. I never got checked when I had it, though.
