Child with pooping issues

My friends 2 year old poops about every two days. The poop is very hard and she sometimes has a hard time getting it out. He asked the doctor and was told to have her eat more fiber. No change. Any suggestions as well as a second opinion?

Re: Child with pooping issues

  • is she drinking enough water? IS there any reason that she would be afraid of going potty?

    that's all i;ve got.

  • I think this is fairly normal. I'd add more fruits, vegtables and water into the diet, but nothing drastic. I'd make an effort to sit an 'try' to poop (same time) everyday. Constipation would benefit from medication like Miralax, but this child is not constipated.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • He says she drinks enough and is not afraid to poop. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass it along.
  • Seven serviings of fruits and or vegetables a day. No processed food. A small glass of prune juice daily.

    The kid will poop.

  • Give fruits especially ones beginning with a P.... peaches, pears, plums, prunes... they help soften and make them more regular.

what is enough?  Did the pedi say she was getting enough or is he basing it off what he drinks?  Because adults don't drink enough to begin with.

Yup. My brother had the same issue when he was a kid - he would go days without pooping. The doctor told my mom to give him P fruits and make sure he drank enough water. It really helped.

  • My son does this.   He's slightly over 2 1/2.    He prevents himself from pooping.  I think because he's been constipated in the past, he's afraid of pooping because he's afraid it'll hurt.    He clenches and bends over and does anything he can to prevent it.

I would add more fruits if possible, and more water/juice.   Also, does the child drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese?   That can actually cause some constipation (my son LOVES milk, so we switched him to mostly soy milk, and also have used coconut milk).   I think that has helped somewhat.
