So last night I had a real "ah ha" moment and I know finally get aperture and shutter speed and how they work together with light and how it works in my camera.
My instructor is really, really big on learning and understanding light. She mentioned casually that she doesn't shoot with a flash. I thought that was interesting and something I hadn't thought much about.
Anyway, she really wants us to understand how adjusting these two settings can let the same amount of light into the camera, but do two different things (shallow depth of field, long depth of field and/or how it works with motion for shutter speed).
So for Tuesday I have to bring in around 150 unedited pictures with "light as the subject". So sunlight, lamps, street lamps, moon, etc. She feels light is so important in understanding but can also do interesting things (shadows, patterns etc) and she wants us to start thinking about that.
Anyway, just wanted to share! I could have stayed in class forever last night, I just felt like things were clicking!

(Just don't forget the ISO! It's really a triangle of numbers that you are working with
)
Sounds like she is a great person to learn from!
Here is a great blog post that goes into the "math" behind the numbers; I have printed parts of it and keep them in my bag with me as good cheats and reminders. Not sure if you'll find it interesting or not, but I thought I would share
Photography Math (& a Depth of Field calculator)
Okay more (sorry!), these are a few posts written by Amy (I like to pimp her blog) and she has a series all about light:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
(Techniques & Tips - Backlighting)
Thanks Jules! I'll take a look at those.
We're covering ISO next week! There's only so much she can go over, but she does a really good job (at least so far)! I wish she kept people on topic a little more, but there's not a lot she can do there either.

Ha, I bet! Everything is so interrelated that I am sure it's really hard not to start crossing into another topic!
