Potty Training Question

We are in the process of potty training and it's going really well. When we are at home Neena uses the potty all of the time. Most of the time she just walks over to it, pulls her underwear down, and pees. We haven't had an accident in awhile.

However, I haven't been working on the training while out, and we are out a lot. How does that work? Do you just really stress to them that they have to tell you when they need to pee or poop? Any tips for me? I'm clueless on this part of it.

Re: Potty Training Question

  • In the beginning, I told Betsy I had to go and she should go too.  So we when we got to a new place, I said, ok let's go potty before we shop.  I let her pick if I go first or if she does (she always picks me). I would go and then lift her onto the potty and she would go. She almost always had something come out, even if we had just gone 20 minutes before when we left the house.

Did she eventually catch on and just start telling you she had to go?

ETA: Did you use some form of pull-up or cloth training pant while out? How well do they contain accidents?

  • Yes, she caught on and now yells I have to go potty! really loud.  LOL  But even now, I have her go before we go do something else, like head for home or go in the play area at the mall.

I took her out in undies and never used a pull-up.  But she was over 3 when I potty trained her.  She never had an accident.  I just made sure that I had to go potty every 30 minutes when we were out.  :)

  • Sophia potty trained during the summer so it made it especially easy on us because I just let her run around outside in our yard in just a dress, no undies.  Then it was extremely clear when she started to dribble so she got the cue that she needed to go.  We only ever did Pull Ups at night.  If we were out and about I would just remind her to go before we left the house and then ask every 20-30 minutes while we were out.

For potty training (as with much of my parenting) I leave it up to Sophia to determine when/if she is ready for something so I felt asking her was the best way to go instead of demanding she try to go.

  • We also always had them go right when we got to wherever we were going.  Eventually they just got to the point where they wanted to see every bathroom.  At first we did a diaper on top of underwear then eventually we switched to potty training underwear with nothing else.  We never went the pullup route.

We've very much been going with the flow (ha!) It's like all of sudden (the last week) it just clicked for her. She's still pretty young (just turned 2) so I don't want to rush anything. So, I think your advice is perfect!

  • We trained him to tell us when he had to go, but I'd always tell him to go before he left the house "If you want to go bye-bye we have to potty first" He's always been good about going 2-3 hours without having an accident. He would tell us when we were out if he had to go.

At first though I put him in a diaper (we CD and I didn't want to buy training diapers, so just a regular AIO) An accident in the grocery store is one thing, one in the car seat is a whole other kind of awful. I only had to learn that lesson once! About a month of that though and he was wearing underwear out without any issue.
