Top Komen official resigns in protest over grants cuts

NEW YORK ? As the outcry grows over Susan G. Komen for the Cure fundings cuts to Planned Parenthood, a top official at Komen, Mollie Williams, has resigned in protest, according to a source. Williams had been Komen's director of community health programs.

Williams, in an email, said she could not comment on her departure for reasons of professional confidentiality, but she was clear about her views.

"I have dedicated my career to fighting for the rights of the marginalized and underserved," she wrote. "And I believe it would be a mistake for any organization to bow to political pressure and compromise its mission."

Top leaders of Komen have denied Planned Parenthood'simage assertion that the decision to cut breast screening funds was driven by pressure from anti-abortion groups. According to Planned Parenthood, its health centers performed more than 4 million breast exams over the past five years, including nearly 170,000 as a result of Komen grants.

Re: More Komen News

  • The communications manager of the Raleigh Triangle Region resigned as well.
  • Good for her. I love that Bloomberg is stepping up with $250,000 too.
  • Regardless of whether Komen reinstates funding or not, their brand has forever lost its apolitical reputation. Even people who do not support Planned Parenthood are going to shy away from being involved in their fundraising because they're no longer an organization that everyone supports.

There are far too many organizations with no sort of political taint that the office "charity of the month" or similar can get behind without risking offense. You can put this week down as the mark of when Komen officially stops growing.

  • Good for her.

Included in the article is a bunch of protesting that this is all due to policy and has nothing to do with politics bullshitbullshitbullshit, although plenty of people (including those inside the organization disagree).

"Komen has said the decision stemmed from newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations under investigation ? affecting Planned Parenthood because of an inquiry by a Republican congressman acting with encouragement from anti-abortion activists"

I do believe that someone on PCE posted yesterday that Komen gives money to Penn State. I guess they aren't considered an organization because they sureashell are under investigation.

I was going to post the same thing.  PCE had some really good discussions yesterday regarding the whole debacle.  Even our utra-conservative, republican hugging local news was giving Komen the side eye last night.  I thought it was wonderful.  I'm wanting to read the Komen FB feed and all the comments people have left, but I think it would turn into a big time-suck.

Anyone else read Komen is claiming that their donations actually went up yesterday?  I find this incredibly hard to believe, and they didn't release their numbers.  What a PR nightmare.

  • SGK also stated yesterday that they won't fund stem-cell research.

    Color me shocked.

Our news posted that Komen donations are up 100% over the past day. I was surprised to see that at the end of the article.

  • At this point refusing to fund stem cell research is like refusing to fund research that suggests the earth revolves around the sun instead ofbthe other way around.

I love the 'nuh uh, we got sooo many donations you guys but we're not releasing the numbers but like, trust us,' story. It's like their next press release will read, to whom it may concern: na na na na boo boo.

That's really misleading.  If they only pulled in $500 the day before, 100% increase really isn't that amazing, it just sounds good.  I'd like to see hard numbers.

    Is this a new policy?

Sailorette- Most of the comments are on the PP side, but there are some that are infuriating. I do not understand why so many people believe that PP uses federal funds for abortion. That is not now and never has been the case. At least not in the past 20 years. I have also learned that I should learn how to do a breast exam on the Internet (where? at the library?) so that I don't run the risk of being referred to an 'abortionest'. Oh, and Bloomberg should not give that money because it's taking services away from women. Whut?!?

Hrm. Abortionest. I will call that my new word.

I've been involved in projects for another big research foundation (think diabetes of the juvenile persuasion) and it is amazing the things that will make people, especially business shy away from fundraising for a charity. Anything that has the shine of controversy at ALL and they are not going to risk offending people when they can just support a charity that everyone can get behind.

Awesome. I made sure to send in a donation card I got last week.

I hadn't seen this quote, but appreciate you posting it. Have wondered what Susan would think of all of this whole situation if she were still alive. Sad that her name is irreparably damaged.
