Mommy and me classes?

Today was my last day at work, and I'm now a SAHM. I'd like to take the baby to mommy and me etc. things. He's almost 4 months old. Does anyone know of things like this, or where I can go to find things like this? I have heard of singing groups or I don't even know what else, just looking for activities to get the little one out of the house and interacting with other kids.

Re: Mommy and me classes?

  • I'm not sure where you live, but my daughter and I do a couple of things- we go to swim lessons on Saturday mornings- those start at 6 months, so you have a couple months to wait, but something to put on your radar.  We go to Neshaminy School District, and it's $60 for 10 weeks, which is a huge bargain.  They will start a new session in March actually, but they haven't posted dates/sign up info yet.  Their website is neshaminyaquatics.com if you are interested.  Of course, local YMCAs offer them too, and perhaps your local township recreation dept. may have something as well if Neshaminy is far.

We also attend a free music class at Becker's in Willow Grove on Friday afternoons at 1pm.  There is also a Thursday 4:15pm class for that.  Sign-ups are first come, first serve.  Our last class of this session is next week, so I'm guessing we will sign up the following week.

Finally, we attend storytimes at the library.  We went to one at the Roslyn Library for awhile, but that is on hold now.  Beginning in Feb., our local library in NE Philly is starting one for kids 18 mos. and up, which I know isn't helpful for your guy, but again, check with local libraries.  Barnes & Noble has storytimes too at most locations on various days.

I know a lot of people love the Romp n Roll/Gymboree type stuff, but I just can't justify spending the $$$....plus we did do a demo class at one of them and I just wasn't feeling it.

  • I've been doing The Little Gym with my DD since she was 4 months. We also have done swimming
  • We joined an exercise group, music classes, mom and me happy hours and did a lot of playgroups at our local library.

Also, check on meetup.com to see if there are any local mom groups.  When Charlie was little I just happened to become pretty friendly with a nestie who lived close to me, so we would meet at our local park and have playdates at least once a week.  If I had felt like we didn't have a lot going on, I would have looked into it.

We tried Gymboree/My Gym/Little Gym but I didn't love it and it is expensive

  • So, we loved Romp and Roll.  It is much more reasonable than Little Gym or Gymboree, but it is just too far away for us.

We go to an open gym at a local church by us, but that starts at 18 months.  We also do Sally Music Circle at the Little Treehouse, and are members.

I joined the local MOMS group, but haven't done anything.  The paperwork makes them seem every into the SAH aspect, and just is NMS.  I contacted someone once to RSVP to a playdate and they never replied - it just left a bad taste. I'm not looking for emotional support, and I don't think SAH is the end all be all of child raising.  I recently found a local meet-up group that is more my style -  A more diverse group of moms, weekday and weekend events, and moms nights out.

  • Thanks so much guys I'll look into al of this.
  • I'm not sure where you're located but I'm in the Horsham area, and also SAH with my 8 month old.  I've been searching for "activities" for us to do together, and our library has a very popular "mommy and me" storytime.  I tried to get us in this session, but it filled up almost immediately.  There's another session that begins in March for under 18 mos, so I'm going to try to get us signed up for that.

Our township also has a music class for babies, which I may try to do in the Spring.

There are a lot of great ideas on here though, so thanks for posting this.  I'm not sure what your situation is, but I'm the first one out of my "group" to have a baby, so it can be hard to find things to do/meet other moms.

  • I'm in warminster, so fairly close to both Horsham and Neshaminy. The poor little man is getting surgery the 29th of feb. so the march swim class will probably be too soon, but I def. want to keep my eye out, as that sounds awesome! Same goes with the library stuff. This is all such great information. I too am the first out of all of my friends to have a baby, although one friend just had her baby two days ago, so eventually I'm sure that will help things too!

Alwayssusie - where are the music classes held at your township? That sounds great as well.

  • This is the site for the mailer they sent around:

Although looking at it now it's a little $$$ for a 6 week class, so I think I'm going to check out the free class at Beckers (I didn't even know they had that), or even Romp and Roll, which is right in Willow Grove too.

Probably the best thing I've done since being at home has been joining a gym with a really nice kids area, which lets her have interaction with other babies, lets me work out, and lets us both have a little "break" from each other during the day.  The fact that I want to keep her in a routine also is motivation to go 5x/week!

Hands down, this is the best thing I have done for myself since becoming a SAHM.  We didn't start until DD was around 18 months, and it was a tough transition for her, but now they both love it.  DD is shy and it definitely helped her become more outgoing.  I also think it was good for DS to get used to someone else being in charge before he starts school in the fall
